Many people will trade you packages of agar agar powder over in the marketplace.
I have acquired over a lb of Agar powder from trades in the marketplace, at a cost to me of $6-10 in shipping.

here's a link for info on making your own agar
http://www.shroomery.org/9393/FastFreds-Media-Cookbook
I make my own Malt Extract Agar and it's super cheap. Malt is available online from brewer's supply stores for about $5 a pound, and pure agar is available as a local asian market for about $1.50 per pack. Well wort the extra effort IMO.

I am looking to get into agar but the agar mentioned above is restricted. From the website itself: "Saboraud Dextrose Agar, 113 g This item is restricted, it only ships to registered educational institutions."
I'm still looking.

I found the best deal on amazon
If I payed $20 for 10 dishes, I'd be broke by now. I have ~150 dishes in use at any given time. "Half assed" pfft...

I did some research. The local health food store sells agar in bulk for $58/lb. I found that a quarter lb would make like 400 100mm (large) petri dishes. I'm looking to get an eighth for about $8 that will do around 200 dishes. Does that sound reasonable or should I go to the homebrew store and buy a lb of malt extract?

That seems decent enough, you're going to have to get the malt extract in addition to the agar though, so you ought to go to the homebrew store regardless.
