Ubuntu media server
    #14161610 - 03/21/11 09:32 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm planning on using ubuntu to run a server that can stream music/video to any device (plan on setting up dynDNS at some point) using my TV as a head and an optional phone as a roaming head (with remote command line app and MPD head).  I'll be using it for general web surfing, tinkering, and obviously streaming media.

I have a Dell Dimension DM051 Pentium(R) D, 2.8 GHz with 1 GB RAM that I'm planning on using.  Unfortunately my NIC is shot and I don't have a HDMI compatible video card.

You may say that there are enough linux threads, but I plan on using this thread for any issue I have with this process rather than derail other peoples attempt for help.

Anyways, as of right now I'm only interested in people opinion on ubuntu friendly NICs (I've had trouble with NIC drivers on ubuntu) and an appropriate A/V card(s).

I'm planning on using ubuntu because I've heard it's built for linux newbs (read: "me") but if anyone is aware of a distro better suited for my tasks let me know.

I was thinking that but I was wondering what the card options are.

so youre going to use the server as a HTPC also?

ideally if your TV supports streaming from a DLNA server you would use that instead. its a hell of a lot nicer than running a long HDMI cable (cheaper too).

also.. audio over HDMI on linux isnt 100% perfect yet. youd really be taking a shot in the dark as far as compatibility with that goes.

anyway.. for a NIC you should be good to go with any off the shelf card. it has been a long long time since ive had to worry about that. itll be recognized automatically when you plug it in. i suggest using a GigE NIC.

I can only vouch for using Ubuntu; the community of Ubuntu users so so enormous by now that any imaginable problems has usually been discussed and resolves, making for a huge online knowledge base. This knowledge in 99.9% of the cases is also usable in other distros, so in the end it doesn't really matter that much which one you use, but there's just no really good reason to _not_ use Ubuntu.

Yeah, the only problem I've had with linux + NICs is when it comes to setting up wireless for my laptop, but I'm not gonna get into that.  I'm pretty aware that ubuntu has good NIC support.

I've never had problems with NICs or wireless config. I can't seem to get audio over HDMI with my GeForce GTS 250, though.

Edit: Asus P5B-E, P965 Express/ICH8R

are you using ubuntu? ]
When I need HDMI sound I need to configure my sound profile.

You can do this the easy way by going through System>Preferences>Sound Preferences and Change Profile to Digital Stero (HDMI)

At least this is what I do. I hope this helps.
