The strange things you find...(pics!!!)

I decide this beautiful, windy first official day of Spring should be commemorated with a nice slow walk through the woods around my house. I'm just looking at the decay from the previous seasons and the new life springing forth from this one.
I start following this small dried up creek bed on our property, mostly looking at some of the interesting quartz stones the rain storms have revealed. As I'm walking along I start to think about how this used to be Cherokee land and how I've yet to find even an arrowhead in all the years I've lived here.
Well, I walk up the creek bed and see the most unusual item sticking out of the ground. At first I can only see the barrel but then as I reach down and move some leaves and dirt away I unearth an entire rifle! I stand there for a minute staring incredulously at this weapon in my hands.
I'm not a "gun person". I've never owned a gun and did not grow up around guns. I know that this weapon is heavy, solid, long, made of wood and metal and probably pretty damn old.
I haul it up to my house, take a few photos of the gun (and a few of me with the gun) and then jump online to learn something about this weapon. Etched into one part of the gun I can make out the words "Budapest M95".
From what I can tell thus far, this is an infantry rifle manufactured on a island somewhere near Budapest, Hungary. It was made for the Imperial Austro-Hungarian Empire soldiers that fought in the first World War. I have no idea how it ended up in the North Georgia foothills.
The best guess I can muster is that this weapon belonged to a moonshiner. Apparently the exact area I live in was used for making moonshine back in the Prohibition Era. Perhaps some redneck moonshiner had bought this gun sometime during the 20's and then for some reason or another dropped it or left it in a hurry (perhaps being chased by the Law) and here I am 70 some odd years later stumbling upon what they left behind.
Who knows? Either way, the gun is super interesting and definitely one of the coolest things I've ever found in the woods.

here are a few shots of some wild strawberry blossoms (at least I think that's what they are):

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

i'll hold on to it. it's pretty rusted up, don't think it would be worth much (then again, maybe it is ).
that bastard from pawn stars would low ball the shit out of me. fuck him.

That rifle would make a good wall piece if you cleaned the rust off and put a new finish on the wood.

nah... it's a modern cheapie claymore type of junk sword, the $20 flea market kind
that steyer you found would be a good restoration project, something of a hobby to screw around with and hang on the wall, they were great rifles for their day

here it is:

my grandfather brought this back from WWII. he said he got it from a german infantry soldier. its been sitting in the basement ever since.
pretty sure we looked it up a few years ago. IIRC it was a WWI era rifle that had basically just been reissued in WWII.
I've got Danzig stamped on mine.. no Budapest.

i wouldnt try cleaning it up before taking it to someone who could tell you if it was of value. if it is worth something, and you try to restore it yourself, you could kill the value.
i never find cool stuff like that, best things ive ever found was a bag of coke, and a 100 bill.

My grand daddy brought back a similar rifle from WWII, but it was the Japanese rifle

it looks like a mauser to me.. prolly 6.5 or 8mm.... idk, id need closer and clearer pictures of it to be more specific...
also, please do not clean, refinish, refurbish or alter it in any way until u let someone who knows about guns give it a good looking over... it could be worth money (probably not) and if it is, cleaning or altering it in ANY WAY drops the value significantly

if u r a US citizen you dont have to have a license or anything to own a rifle unless u are in a weird state like Cali, i dont know their gun laws
in the great state of NC all u need is to be 18 years old and have the money for it

NJ has the stiffest laws in the country.
im really not exaggerating when i say no one is able to get a license.. NO ONE.
you must be a cop or a security guard who needs a gun for work.

If you're that worried, tell the police or something that you found a gun and it's completely incapable of firing or even being loaded (if the chamber's rusted shut like you say). I don't think it's still classified as a weapon if trying to get it back in working order would be harder than putting a new one together.
Pretty cool find, though. I'd definitely have a gun collector look at it. I bet it's only worth a couple hundred bucks but the fact that you found it should make it pretty damn special to you

well my rifle is in perfect condition. it is definitely capable of being fired right now if i put the firing pin in it.
RP was the one who said it was rusted through.. i kinda hijacked this thread.

that does look a lot like the one i found. i wonder if it's a updated reissue of the one i found? apparently they refurbished these guns and used them in WW2 as well.
i'm gonna take it to some friends who own a gun shop. they'll be able to tell me everything about the gun, including its worth.
