I have mixed everything right, from the videos for the BRF tek. Last time i had 5 jars, and they started getting a weird, bad smell.. and kind of got dark spots in the spot ive inoculated. I tried this again with different water, sterile.. not sure if this matters or not but the same thing is happening? The spots slowly darkening and a weird smell coming from them.. any ideas? .. Now im out of spores :P. I have organic brown rice flour, Horticulture Verm. (this may be the problem). I used boiled water this time. I heat the needle with a lighter but it leaves a black residue and i wipe it off, 1 without rubbing alch and 1 with.

You are sterilizing your loaded jars in a PC or boiling pot for 1 hour ?
If you are sterilizing them properly ... covered with foil so you are not changing the water content of your cakes ... then I vote for contaminated inoculant (spore syringe) or faulty inoculation technique.
A weird, bad smell sounds like bacteria ... substrate is too wet and/or bacteria present.
good luck

Yeah im steam sterilizing for a little over an hour. It may be my technique, i havent built an inoculation box, but i do it in a still air room etc.. although that may not be enough just trying to learn the basics first before i go all out. The spores in the syringe have a small black cloudy looking things in it, that is normal right.. may be a dumb question XD

if they smell fruity or kinda sweet smelling or like u said weird smellen then there contamed and u need to get rid of them, make a makeship glovebox for a few bucks, boiling Pf jars for me had much higher contam rate compared to a pressure cooker! Then again if u got a contamated syringe u could still do everything right and fail with the dud syringe, yea the cloudy black specks are the spores

BRF jars should be steam sterilized ABOVE the water and for 90 minutes despite what others tell you. Where did you get the spores? Did you use fine verm? What kind of water are you using?

Interesting, must be a sterilizing or inoculation issue....You have the top on the pot? You keep it boiling right?....

Im pretty sure its the inoculation. I havent made a box for it yet, also the black soot i guess its called after i get the tip red hot with a lighter makes me paranoid, i wipe it off with rubbing alch, but im not sure about it to be honest. Also, i try to avoid getting any BRF mix into the needle tip but sometimes its almost impossible to do and i see little bits of the verm in the needle at times, not all the time. Im thinking about here soon making a list of absolutely EVERYTHING i need this time and trying it again, i hate to spend more money but i dont think it will be that much total. I was thinking of just buying a whole kit but i cant seem to find one anywhere. (I am very new to this btw if u cant tell)

Yeah definately get a still air box. Should be only 10 bucks. Some people wipe the needle after flaming and some don't....I personally wipe with rubbing alc and haven't had any problems...You are getting it red hot right? How many syringes have you tried?
