My grandmother was watching a show about LSD and it's medical uses, and I'm pretty sure she said something along these lines..
"They are trying to extract a "legal" drug in LSD, to be used to help treat schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses."
Did anyone happen to see this show?
Know about an article with something similar?
Or did I just hear her wrong?
I'm very interested. Help meh out shroomery!

Well LSD is LSD. You can't extract anything from it. So you heard wrong or she said it wrong. Maybe a precursor or tweaking LSD or something. IDK

I know exactly what you are talking about. It's not "extracting a legal drug from LSD", that makes no sense. LSD is a drug that was originally used in treatment of illnesses from addiction to autism to schizophrenia to anxiety, depression, and cluster headaches and migraines and it was very successful. A good deal of the success when it comes to mental disorders has to do with the psychoactive effect which enables users to push the boundaries of their mind. What some BS scientists are trying to do is use bromo-LSD, which is LSD minus the trip, to treat these diseases, even though regular LSD would obviously be the best choice.

There's an entire spectra of ergot derived drugs. I am sure some have medical use.

Serotonergic systems are heavily involved in a variety of psychiatric disorders.
Thus, it's plausible to imagine some structural modifications that would yield a new drug with therapeutic benefit.
At least that's my guess as to what you heard.

This sounds amazingly close to what I heard, before I asked "what did they say" and she said what I OP'd.

Maybe in the future I'll be taking LSD to treat my schizo.

The show was a natgeo special on LSD. Visit MAPS to see more information on the medical uses of LSD, and there is infinite information on the internet of clinical use from the 70's and trials they are doing now. LSD could offer something for you and your issues with schizophrenia, if you are seriously considering looking into this I recommend you read some of Stanislav Grof's books and research he did with schizophrenics and LSD, along with reading The Acid Diaries by Christopher Gray, which does a brief and very good but not complete overview of LSD research from it's discovery up until it's prohibition and even further.
Eshu- feel free to me for more information!

Sweet! I assume I can get these on Amazon?
I wish LSD wasn't illegal, because I'd love to openly try it, and not have fear of MHU/Jail time. Also, I'm not sure my mom would fare to well with me saying "I'm going to use some LSD" ( I still live at home haters. ) =P
One day, I'll try it. I'm sure!

LSD is beautiful angel! Feel free to for more information on the use of LSD in treating schizophrenia, there is so much beautiful research that was done that even some of avid trippers aren't aware of.

I don't think so. It doesn't sound familiar, and in the wiki page it said nothing about treating mental illness, just migraines.

someone in one my college classes was talking a lot about that he heard of someone's theories of lsd to potentially cure schizophrenia... i don't remember the exact details though but it had to do with the different stages lsd can take you through.

I believe it was an LSD analogue that had no psychedelic effects and they were using it to treat cluster headaches.
-------------------- Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper he names of friends who were near? What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream? What does the sound of a screen door mean? Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind? How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church? Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried. Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does, it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

Grandma probably heard/interpreted it wrong. Mushrooms are being looked at as a way to cure stress before death and cluster headaches, and i think LSD can be used to treat cluster headaches but schizophrenia? kinda seem like throwing fuel on the fire IMO
