There are things other than alcohol that can fuck up your liver. Having hepatitis is a good way to ruin it, abusing opiates such as codeine is another easy way to ruin it and even some poisonous mushrooms cause liver failure.
I know a nurse who works in a ward that deals with transplants and there is a teenage boy who was into being healthy and going to the gym. He thought it would be a good idea to take multivitamin tablets and he took 10 a day of various vitamin tablets. His liver is now fucked and he is waiting to see if he can get a new one, hopefully before it's too late.
Someone I know also had liver failure through no fault of her own. It was not pleasant to see what happens. She started to retain a lot of fluid and looked fat because of it. Sometimes it would leak through her skin. She would get horrible pains and cramps because she would lack certain things in her diet but she had to stay away from foods that would normally stop this because it was bad for her liver. It also caused a build up of toxins in her blood which would make her go crazy. She would start babbling about random things that didn't make sense. It was as if she were mentally ill. She would also throw up as her body was trying to expel the toxins.
She got a transplant but now she is on cyclosporine which lowers her immune system. This is so her body does not reject the donor liver. However, it makes her more susceptible to other illnesses so she needs to be careful and avoid sick people etc. She can now no longer drink alcohol and there are many other things she can not eat now and some things she can only have in small doses.
Anyway, for those of you who think you might need to cut back then I hope this assists you in doing so. It was very unpleasant for me to see it and I can't imagine how it would be to go through it. It kinda reminds me of a guy whom I worked with. He tried to give up smoking a few times but failed. One day he got swine flu and had to go to hospital. He was in a section where there were guys who had been long term smokers and he heard them coughing disgustingly a lot, saw them coughing up gross coloured shit and also struggling to breathe etc etc. He quit smoking cigarettes after that.

Some guy I used to work with had terrible liver results because he either took too many advils or tylenol because he has a flu.
His results were extremely high and before the docs knew it was the tylenol or advil he thought he would have to stop drinking for the rest of his life..
He got scared!

I weed
I've heard that more and more people are using weed to get help them get off harder drugs and having great success. It's not properly "addictive" in itself, but I've noticed that it has a marked anti-craving effect for everything from booze to speed. Once I'm good and , other drugs seem somehow... unnecessary.
It's like the opposite of alcohol that way

I sometimes have success with tapering off, just taking a drink or two a night to transition into quitting entirely. Seems to make it a lot easier withdrawal-wise, though it can also be easy to just relapse and run out for a 6-pack after finishing your allotted two. You know how it is, once you've had one you want MORE. Being able to control that is a good skill to cultivate IMO.

This has worked best for me in the past, though I don't always have the willpower to keep it up... I've been bad recently.

What do you think is better in the long run
Quitting cold turkey or slowing down until a complete stop?

The only time I have ever thought about my liver was when I watched the scene in Saving Private Ryan where the medic is lying down wounded and says "Aww, my liver!"--it made me think about how painful it might be to be shot in the liver by a machine gun.

IMO it depends on the drug, depends on the circumstances, and depends on the individual.

Repeated detoxifications can lead to more and more severe withdrawal syndromes in a process called "kindling," or so I've read.
I'm no expert on this subject but I'd wager tapering down would be better for you in the long run, accounting for the possibility that you start getting crunk all the time again at some point.

i quit drinking cold turkey the day after halloween last year. was becoming too much of a fuckin wino (i loved my wine). got a family full of alcoholics on one side, a few addicts on the other. ain't worth it, imo.
been glad i stopped drinking. alcohol affects my mood in a negative way more than any other drug i've consumed.
now i just eat an edible from time to time and stick to the mushies when i can find 'em. feel pretty damn healthy all the time

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell
