Hi everyone, I'd like to start off by saying thank you, for all the info I've learned from the forums and shroomery peepes!
I just harvested part of my first grow, and have some questions!
I used a mushbox grow bag and a spore syringe from spores 101!
I intend to start doing the pf tek and casing tek eventually, but I thought this would be cool way to get my feet wet.
A few q's: I have already picked some of the mushies, from what I've learned they need to be picked when the veil is staring to tear, or torn. Do these pics look ok for mushrooms that are ready to be picked?
Is there a good way to clean them? They appear to have compost stuff on the bottom of them? I know total newb! (haha)
When picking them is it ok to use your hands, after washing them and cleaning them? Or should I use gloves? Any help would be much apprechiated, all comments, ideas, suggestions would be awesome!
And final questions, what's the best way to dry them, I hear just leaving them under a fan is ok?

Those look to be @ the perfect time for picking. You can wait a little longer if you want too, it won't hurt. You'll probably just end up getting spores in your FC & on your mushies. Also if you want till they start getting close to flat, that's when you make prints out of them.
I wait until they're cracker dry then brush off the bottoms w/ a soft toothbrush.
When I pick, I wash my hands w/ soap, put on gloves & wipe those down w/ iso. I do this because, when picking, you're exposing substrate & opening a small door for contams.
I use a food dehydrator. Check your local thrift stores for a cheap one. I've heard of the fan method, but I think it'd be better to put them in front of a small space heater to dry them a bit quicker. I recommend a small dehydrator though. Set & forget style.
Good job on your first grow brotha.

Hey brotha, thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it.
Do you think they would be ok to munch, wet? After cleaning them up a bit!? I'm just worried about the compost stuff on the bottom?
Thanks again for responding so quick!

O yea, eat them up wet. No problems there. You're just going to have an issue dosing, because the rule of thumb is 1g. wet = .1g dry (or reduced to 10% of the mass). However, I've found this number to fluctuate greatly depending on many variables. I've had some that were 7% & others that were 15%...just all depends on the random genetics.
If you're going to eat them wet, you can run the bottoms under a slow running facet to get the dirt of the bottoms.

Sweet! I love eating my own homegrown mushies! cant get better than that. A sense of pride arises when you can make your own supply.

Hey guys I took some pics of the bottom of the mushies.
I'm seeing shades of blue, green, and black is this normal?
They seem to be drying pretty amazingly.
Just picked today about 7:30 am March 21st....
Everything look good so far?

Hey everyone, do these look ok?
They seem super dark, and bruising?
Is this normal?

Thanks for the info, buddy. I'm a total newb!
Is it same to leave them under a fan or between paper towels for drying?
I'm trying to get a dehydrater as suggested, by another shroomery member, but kinda low on funds right now.
Thanks again.

you can put them on towel and put a fan on them, you can put them in the oven on the lowest setting and leave the door cracked, or if you hve a ps3 or 360 you can set them in front of the fan while you're playin some games :P
