Outdoor Azures in the Southeast
    #14156064 - 03/20/11 08:47 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Azure outdoor beds in the Southeast, particularly zone 8.  Thanks to the kind souls on this board and the Myco board great success has been achieved indoors with Cube's.  Ready to move on to the woodies.  I've done months of research and believe I understand the process.  Just not sure how they will react in my area.  Summer heat and humidity are pretty intense.  Have access to plenty of Adler. Have what I believe is a proper site for a bed, irrigation would be diligent.  I'm just concerned with fruiting. We normally don't get a good cold spell until mid to late November.  I'm just curious if anyone has experience with outdoor woodies in this area.  I've searched rather diligently on the boards and haven't seen any info for this area.  Let me thank you ahead of time for any insight.

check the link in my sig; there is a lot of good info on the process of pulling it off, but it's not based on location. you probably won't get many answers on your question specifically. you'd be better of just trying it out and hoping for the best.

if you're gonna do it though, you better get your spawn ready asap. it's getting late in the season to start from scratch. however, I do know of one grower who transplanted as late as June and got fall fruits.

hope this helps. good luck with it!

Thanks for the input.  I've got some LC ready to go, should have the chips colonized in the next 2 weeks.  Hoping that'll be enough time for a Merry Xmas;)  It's just that the weather here is so different than their normal environment, especially in timing and heat. It'd be nice to get one established for the holidays every year   I'm gonna give it a go, I find it fascinating to say the least.

if you don't mind sharing, how did you make the LC?

I had some Ps. cyan spores charge through a honey LC, but they aren't taking to the wood. I might be exhibiting my impatience, but it's been a 3 weeks already. I'm thinking I need to supplement the honey with some hardwood dust next time. or just get my shit together and start working with agar...

i used a variation from this Tek...  http://forums.mycotopia.net/exotic-magic-mushroom-species-woodlovers/14446-azurescens-liquid-culture-spawn-fruits.html

I thought the process of using the "tea" from the wood chips soaking was genius.  I did PC mine, however,  with that ratio.

nice! I like that a lot. I don't know why I didn't think of that already :wow:

I'm definitely gonna try this very soon.

I tried some Cyans in an LC with some sawdust also and got the same results as you.  From what I've read Cyans from LC to fruit should be fairly quick.  I'm sure my mistakes were environmental.  Once you get a sterile colonization, the environmental factors seem to be the deciding factor and that's what makes it interesting to me.

I don't mind and I would imagine the original poster doesn't mind (hopefully since I did it already).  It seems these 2 boards cross post a lot.  I am tempted to try the baby bottle Tek though.  It can't be that simple lol.

I've not tried microwaving as a sterilizing technique, but I see it as a shortcut for the impatient. From what I read, that leads to bad things in cultivating.

here is the spot where I'm gonna post this method if you want to read it. some excellent info in there on woodlover setups.

I agree, that's why I PC'd mine.  Although because there really isn't anything to introduce a contam, at least a very small risk, in the LC itself, with it consisting of only liquid and pasteurized karo, it makes sense.  Perhaps the enzymes released in the wood soaked water trigger a more natural less stressful response from the spores in an environment not conducive to greedy bacteria.  Regardless, it's good Jazz .  Nice thread BTW, like it.

the more natural thing is how I'm looking at it

trying to think like the mycelium in a sugar-solution, "MMM, this is delicious!" gobble, gobble, gobble.

insert moronic primate and some woodchips

"WTF is this?!? I want my sugar high!"

Exactly.  Although if we like it us monkeys carry it around and spread the spores.  Give a monkey a good story and he'll tell all his friends lol.

Haven't tried sawdust in LC, I'll have to give that a try!
