contaminated grow chamber. need advice
    #14156065 - 03/20/11 08:47 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi guys,

First time post.  Was out of town over the weekend and came back to the grow chamber with massive contamination. This occurred during the second flush. Did not dunk inbetween flushes. Was going to do it after this flush.  Use tropic-aire humidifier and dolphin 4star air pump. (hooked that system up just before leaving for the weekend.  Prior to using those, was using a humidifier with 3x 2 liter bottle setup and fanning.) Have not been putting h202 in the water coming from the humidifiers.

So what do I do now?  Are any of these mushrooms salvageable with trimming or should they be discarded?  What about the cakes? Can I try to cut away infected portions of the cakes and still hope for growth later? What is the best way to get my setup contamination free and moving forward?  How do I avoid this in the future? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I agree.

If you are referring to the black/purple stuff, then those are spores. The Pic is kinda fuzzy, but I dont see any contamination there.

Oh wow it looks so messy inside. Is it bad to let spores drop or should I do something differently next time?  Also, I have a lot of nonfruiting cakes.  I didn't dunk any of the cakes before putting them in the fruiting chamber so is that the likely problem.  If I dunk them now, can I expect any results.  They have been in the fruiting chamber for approx 1 week.

Appreciate the help.

spores are just a little messy, no big deal. next time just pick the fruits as (or before) the veil tears.
yeah, you should see some better results by dunking them

Yeah go ahead and dunk all of them. And like everyone said, those are spores, nothing to worry about.

Try to automate less and be more hands-on and you'll get better results. I don't see any holes in that tub so the perlite is pointless, you need to drill 1/4" holes every 2 inches on ALL 6 SIDES.

It's possible the nonfruiting cakes were overhydrated from the humidifier and therefore never pinned. Evaporation and fresh air exchange are 2 major pinning triggers, and if humidity remains exactly 99% from day one there's little to no evaporation at the cake surface, therefore you get a poor pinset or it doesn't pin.

So to summarize, if I were you, I'd dump the perlite into another container, drill the tub, rinse the perlite and put it back in while the cakes are dunking.

Spores shouldnt hurt anything. Happens to me all the time, you wait a little too long to harvest, and BAM a mess. Usually I take it out in the garden and hose it out .

I would dunk those cakes and try for some more, worst case scenario, you get nothing. My last cakes fruited 4 times.

Is there a mushroom (rightmost center) growing directly out of the perlite or is it off that cake just above it?

It's coming out the cake even tho it does really look like its growing straight out of the perlite.

PS. thank you to everyone for the responses.

I have recently started my grow process and everything went great with no signs of contamination but just before they were ready to fruit a few green spots popped up the size of a dime. They haven't spread but I did remove them and now there are white dots where they previously were. Does anyone know what this could be? Can I still eat the mushrooms safety and will this affect future harvests?

that would be trichoderma (forest green mold) my friend x( . Unfortunately, the green spots are mass deposits of spores from this fungus. The trichoderma colony is white in color, making it hard to catch a contamination in its early stages, but as it matures, it takes on the "bubbly" appearance you mentioned, and can be easily distinguished from healthy mycelium. Once the green spores are present on the surface, its likely they have been spread my moving air throughout the chamber. While there are ways to "corral" the colony and slow its growth on the surface (covering affected area with generous sprinkle of salt and/or h202) trich will spread beneath the surface, leaving a trail of "mushy" substrate. The only thing one can do is keep it off and away from mature fruits/pins long enough to squeeze the most yield out of the tub. SWIM has never had any problems with consuming fruit from an infected tub, but it IS mold :/ . Make sure whoevers tub that is  cleans it real good and wish them luck in their future alchemical endeavors. peace
