In my personal opinion I don't think it will harm the flow of the piece too much if you write in either a maj or a minor.
Some contrast in that department would probably be beneficial.
My first attempt

Eh major, eh?
I really need to learn some theory. I have a book that will teach me all but I haven't gotten past the first few pages yet.

it's not too hard on guitar. learn the minor scales and you're pretty much almost there.

Here's a hint, whatever key the minor is the relative minor of, play that key, but starting on the 6th note of the scale.
That's one method. whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, that's the interval structure for aeolian mode

there's no point sticking to the scale though. where's the dynamics? switching a sharp/flat tone to a natural tone at the right moment will give your sound a nice kick. music is about creativity and how you can manipulate your sound to portray how you feel. imo, music is nothing more but an audible translation of emotions.

But a scale is still a place to start, I didnt say stick to it like glue. And plenty of the most emotionally powerful music is written in basic scales.

i disagree. every classical piece i have ever learned, be it on piano, violin, or guitar, never stuck to the scale, only the key.

the way i look at it scale and key are just "guidelines" or can help you form a backbone

Also the term 'key' is vague and widely argued in all of music, and many shcools argue the keys and key signature are based on scales. Also having an opinion does no make it fact.
