seedlings in a mini greenhouse / martha?
    #14154649 - 03/20/11 04:07 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

what kind of vegetable or herb seedlings if any would grow well under very high humidity; around 80-90 percent. the reason i am asking is because i want to start a few plants for my patio garden (i live in an apt) and i was wondering if i could start them in my martha / automated fruiting chamber. i already have 2 40 watt Fluorescent lights set up above the greenhouse set on a 12/12 cycle for lighting, and the coolmist provides fresh air. what do you think of this idea?

Yup, it works great. Provides FAE too! I've done B. Caapi and several other tropicals/sub-tropicals.

Just keep the pots clean and watch for mold/algae etc. A little cheshunt compound won't hurt in mild solution.

I have 30watt fishtank (waterproof) fluouro's (daylight 6500k) inside my martha. They love it in there.

Think oregano prefers it a little drier.. Morning glory worked exceptionally well. Think pepper and toms could def be started in there, but you'll wanna move them when they hit the vegetative stage.

Never tried herb.. ask me in a few weeks.

It's a good idea to add something to the soil for aeration, soil can obviously get rather soggy and lead to root rot. Make sure they can drain from the bottom.

whats a good method for soil aeration in a greenhouse, just holes at the bottom of the pots and a second container to catch excess water or something more elaborate?

the mint would be a great idea, plus it will keep you martha smelling minty fresh. add a few terra carta shards to your soil to give it nice aeration. will your gh be outside or indoors ?

good idea with the terra cotta i got a few extra pots lying around i can smash and mix into some soil. the GH is indoors but i plan on moving the plants outdoors once they get big enough.

Yeah terracotta should work well, you can also buy bags of soil loosener/lightner at any garden store. A little perlite doesn't hurt either. Sounds counter-intuitive but it's lighter than wet soil and keeps the mixture loose.

Don't put anything under the pots, allow them to drain and mist/water as needed.

The broken clay pot in soil to increase drainage is a myth. All you're doing is limiting your container space. Solid pieces of clay do not hold any air so what's the point?

You would be better off using perlite, scoria or hydrotron balls which are made of clay but have air pockets in them.

I'm talking smashed terracotta, definitely worked for me in the past. Terracotta is semi-permeable, hence terracotta pots are good for cacti etc where root rot can be a real issue. It won't hold as much water as soil so it will make a diffference to saturation etc.

But I agree perlite or a specifically designed mix will be better.
