Can fruits rot before picked?
    #14152662 - 03/20/11 07:53 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

This may be a silly question, but it looks like my fruits are rotting before they are even picked. Hm. Is this a contam?

No silly, it's because the veils on caps have opened and spores dropped. pick them and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

purple bits are the spores but the mushrooms look very fluffy, that normally happens when the chamber is too dry.

But still safe to eat etc, so pick them soon

On my last monotub grow, I left the little guys in the tub for four days after the veils had broken.  When I came back from my mini-vacation, all of the mushrooms were completely black and the caps had curled up.  I thought they had rotted for sure, but after picking some of them and cleaning the spores off to reveal their natural color, they were just fine.  So yeah, to answer your question, spores create a big mess which is one of the reasons to pick them as soon or even slightly before (although this comes with more experience) the veil breaks.
