air pureifier...mini flow hood
    #14150952 - 03/19/11 09:49 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was just wondering if I could use my hepa filter air purifier to act as a flow hood during open air inoculating.  I will also use it just to keep the air clean in the grow room probably 24/7 I realize this is a stupid noob question but a simple answer would be appreciated.

I know a flow hood is optimal but my wallet is not :um:  :um:

Well I don't know if this is the type of answer you were looking for...
I have had success doing open-air inoculation, always flame-sterilizing the needle thou.

Open air inoculation may work with grain jars and PF jars but if you want to innoc. petri dishes you need a glovebox or at least a still air box (not recommended).

The exit of an air purifier is too small so (dirty) air from the sides will be sucked and blow right on your jars or the plates.

you might be able to put it on it's side and attach the exhaust opening to a box and work inside of it but i'm not sure how effective the filters are.

If doing jars either do it in bathroom sprayed with lysol like i do. Or build a glove box, like I will very soon. Ive thought of doing that myself but having air blown around by an air purifier makes me paranoid.

Short answer: no.

If you could do that, nobody would have $500 flowhood.

Actually, I have successfully used one for very small area purification.  See:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14018563

I've had great success with both pouring and inoculating agar plates, a whole sleeve of which don't fit nicely into my glove box. I've also used it to inflate plastic culture bags to add an air plenum. Everything else, though, I do in a glove box. The very limited clean air area cannot handle jar work, for example.
