Rubicon's first-time Identification Request
    #14151186 - 03/19/11 10:39 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Pertinent information about me: I am a history major at a prestigious public university in northern California. I was once a biology major, and therefore have a rudimentary knowledge of fungus and mushrooms. I have never gone mushroom hunting before. I have imbibed magic mushrooms twice, but they were not picked or identified by me. I am colorblind, so I had my best friend, who is an art major specializing in paint, help give me second opinions about colors. At some points during cataloguing, our opinions differ.

Habitat: Santa Cruz, CA. Abandoned, grassy field- in a forest with both coniferous and deciduous trees. This field has sparsely distributed dung heaps. Not sure if they are cow or horse patties, but there are definitely cows in the area, and I have never seen horses there. These specimens were picked during a heavy rain in March 2011. All specimens were picked directly from dung heaps. They grew in loose patches in the dung.

General handling information: This was my first mushroom hunt ever. I have had two experiences consuming Psilocybe cubensis from a reputable identifier (this is my only mushroom handling experience). I picked these specimens during a spring rain, and stored them in a ziplock bag with paper towels for approximately 1 hour. When I returned home I rinsed them under cold tap water and wrapped them in paper towels, then replaced in the ziplock bag. Cataloguing began 24 hours after harvesting. These mushrooms are NOT fully dried, they are mostly still fresh. I WAS CAREFUL TO PICK ALL OF THE SAME SPECIES, BUT PLEASE NOTIFY IF YOU SEE MORE THAN ONE SPECIES IN THESE PHOTOS.
I am sorry I was not able to garner decent photos of the specimens while they grew, but it was very rainy and my camera is very picky.

Spore Print coming tomorrow
Spore Print coming tomorrow

Size: 1-2 inches tall from ground to top of cap. Cap diameter: 1.5cm (smallest) – 5cm (largest). Stalk circumference: ½  – 1cm. Stalk length: ~1 – 1.5 inches from ground to gills.

Cap: Creamy white mixed with yellow gold. I have only handled Psilocybe cubensis once, and these caps are not as dark or deep gold as those. They appear lighter but gently gold. No scales. Convex, approaching very very slight umbonate or campanulate shape.

Annalus: Very confused about the annalus so please look closely at the photos. There appears to be a skirt attached down the first quarter of the stalk, then fans outward. Skirt skin may have shriveled or fallen off during the washing or drying process. The visible remaining ends of the annalus are dark purple to brown to black. The younger specimens have lighter annalus color (see specimen 1 and 2 versus 3).

Stalk: No scales present. Stalks are thick, hearty. Thicker than the very fragile lawn mushrooms that you can find all over, whose stems break at the slightest touch. Stalks are roughly ½ - 1cm in circumference. Whitish-yellow hue; slightly lighter than the cap. They bruise black/purple. The stalks split vertically very easily and fray slightly as they dry (see specimen 7).

Gills: Appear to be attached to stalks but I’m not certain; I don’t want to risk describing it incorrectly. I looked at a few guides for determining attachment style but I am still unsure. Some gills are light grey to light tan or milky/creamy. Some of the larger caps have dark grey to brown gills; browning as they dry.
Spore Print: Will be finished and posted in a few hours. I wanted to get a good print.

Odor: Very mild earthy smell, to not-present at all. To me, they smell like edible mushrooms found in grocery stores, but much fainter. My friend says he detects a very faint hint of mintiness, but I do not share this experience.

Bruising: My art-major friend inspected the mushrooms and told me that in order to match the bruising color of the caps, he would mix green, blue, grey, and purple in different ratios. The stalks appear to bruise black and purple with slight green tones.
Feel: Wet, slimy, and slippery on the cap when harvested during the rain. These specimens were especially slimy-feeling when compared to other types of mushrooms I palpated that day. I did not harvest any mushrooms that did not appear to be from the same family. The caps are slightly sticky as they dry now, and are less greasy/slimy.

My assessment: I would not hope to guess what species, or even genus, these specimens are. However, to provide an amateur preliminary assessment, I would say these mushrooms do not belong to the genus Psilocybe but rather one that is a lookalike to a layman like me, such as Galerina. If I had to make an educated guess I would say these mushrooms most closely resemble Agrocybe cylindracea, or one of two species of Hypholoma. I am very concerned about the gills, as I once read that white/green/orange gills are signs of poison, and some of these gills appear light approaching white. I am thrown off by the fact that they look so closely to Psilocybes in the field, especially that they grow in cow dung. My estimation is that if these specimens are actual Psilocybes, then they belong to the species cyanescens (I guess that’s not a real Psilocybe actually), azurescens, or baeocystis¸ I have no idea where any of these grow; I’m just matching based on look-alikes.

I know that I am ignorant and would likely poison myself without all of you, so please let me know how I’m doing.

I know you're reasonably certain of this because you're a trusted identifier, but I'm still going to get you that spore print by tomorrow noon. Can you tell me a little about semiglobata please?

It's always a good idea to take a spore print.

Stropharia semiglobata

I'm assuming that they are not psychoactive since I cant find anywhere saying they are. If they are not, can you tell me if other psychoactive mushrooms tend to grow in the same areas that semiglobata do? The field is very large and I intend to return to it to look for different species. Is it possible to determine which species I might encounter?

Oh, I had no idea. Where should I look then? In my immediate area we have thousands of acres of thick, beautiful forest. Should I be checking the ground, or tree stumps, or what? Is there a northern california-specific guide you might recommend me?

thanks for all the help everyone.

aw that makes me so sad. well I will go back to the field and sample some different species; I saw at least three distinct species there. I went with the ones that looked most like psilocybes.
