What would be the best technique to use if I have some intricate 3d objects I want to make molds of so I can remake them out of aluminum.

press peice halfway into casting sand block you want that one pack tight with sand... take second sand block and line it up with first press down and clamp and let sit. now you will have to make a sprue hole no more than an inch from you cavity you press and dig a resavore from sprue hole to cavity. poor moltin medal down sprue hole.

How am I suposed to get the items out of the mold though before I pour the metal in?
Lets say I have a few items like this. http://doorknockersdirect.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/Welsh-Dragon-Brass-Door-Knocker.jpg

sorry for the wait... for the casting sand blocks you will have a two peice metal set which the sand is packed into to make a block, well after you have formed a cavity in the sand with peice you will CAREFULLY lift the top block off and CAREFULLY remove your peice and the replace the top block after proper resevour is trenched between your sprue hole and mold cavity.

I understand that much, but what if you have something that wouldn't be possible to lift out without disturbing the sand.

Carve it out of Styrofoam and leave it in the sand. The hot metal will evaporate the foam as it is poured in.

I wish I was skilled enough to make an intricate carving, Is there anything I use to make a copy of that will get vaporized by the molten metal?
Like if I was to take the original and make a mold out of silicone then make the item out of wax or some kind of plastic and then use that in the sand?

I think the wax cast you describe is how they do golf clubs.

dental alginate, it'll allow you to mold the piece you want and then make a wax or silicon casting of that, once done in silicon it allows you to make several molds, typically pieces as intricate as the one you posted are cast in pieces and assembled
the wax method you mentioned is known as lost wax casting

How about zinc? http://periodictable.com/PopSci/2003/08/1/index.html Batteries usually have a zinc can. If you can find a lot of dead batteries that might be one source. The author of the above article recommends roof flashing.

from what i understand, for wax castings, you have to melt your wax out before you pour in metal. unlike Styrofoam, which just melts away when you pour metal over it.
how are you melting your al?
