Concern with my Liquid Cultures...

kinda bumpin this from the contam form.. cuz technically, I don't even know if its a contam or not!
Insight anyone?
Anyone ever come across this with there LCs??
It looks like mycelium growth on the top of the water... it seems to grow onto the sides a lot, and then there's like little islands of white on top...
Tek used: Dextrose and Extra Light Malt Extract (both dry) its goin on 3 weeks or so now...
sorry for the blurry-ish pics... but LCs are IMPOSSIBLE to get good pics of!! haha :P

not FAE
GE,
fae is fresh air exchange , and ge is gas exchange,
usually you got floaters with mycelium or contams, you dont need light, and heat just room temp
dont make it complicated , its easy

wrong
all my cultures have a little floaters, its the mycelium growing over the surface tension

ahh, i meant GE, but yeah... it is simple... i just got REALLY lazy in typing haha sorry about that. totally unacceptable on my part!!
@doc - yeah, the white patches on top are connected to the huge bottom cloud... its like an upside down lookin tornado... where the white island is the point of the tornado... so while its stiring, the whole bottom is rotating and spiraling to a point where it meets the white stuff on top of the water... so should I use these LCs asap? before it turns green? or just wait it out... jars are like 30% cloud...
Quote:
Wallpapereater said: Shake it like a Polaroid Picture!
ahh, i cant shake, otherwise I would... I have stir rods in all the jars! and its soooo thick on the bottom that i cant even vortex them :\ just stir um... I've been stirring ALL day tho trying to get them to go back in that water haha

Yay!! My first LC's look like this. =) I was worried that it was some sort of contaminant as it didn't look like the mycelium that grew in my jars! Thanks for the pic.

IMO: Its a contamination.
Quote:

it looks like the 'mold' that grows if you leave a flat beer in a cup on the shelf for too long. This 'mold' specially stays on the surface and attaches to the walls and if you try to poke it and submerge it, it will come back to float.

I prefer to use Honey-Water and personally I'm quite happy with results (and pictures). I recommend giving it a go...
Good luck with future LC's!

Yeah, I'm makin a batch of 12 8oz BRF jars tonight... giving the LCs a GOOD magnetic stir, and then going to test um out...
I'll definitely post up the results when I start to see some growth in them, whether it be good or bad :P

well I have 5 different LCs... (4 white islands, 1 other one)
So i figured I would do two jars of each... just 'in-case' one contams due to improper panelization or something, rather than the LC being bad...
plus I'm getting ready to use them for a separate bulk grow... So i wanted to make sure anyways...

yeah, the hard part tho is going to get it to break up... since the one 'tornado' looking jar is super think... connected to the huge white island on top... so when I turn on my home made magnetic stirrer... it just keeps rotates... not enough force to bring it down to the bottom of the jar and start breaking it up :\

I am tempted tho to screw one jar over, and open it up, just to get a CLEAR shot of the white fuzz, and see what it smells like... very VERY tempted...

UPDATE: So i made 10 brf jars to test out the LCs...
Seems to me I'm retarded... cuz if i cant BREAK UP all of whats inside of the LC... then I cant suck it up into a syringe...
No idea how i forgot about that when i decided to make the jars last night... ahg.
So my new plan is to make my grow room into a glove box type setting... aka clean the FUCK outa my walk in closet... and I just made 5 wide mouth plastic lids, drilled one hole in them, and then covered the hole in high-temp sealant... So my goal tomorrow is to undo the lids of my LCs... and then carefully/quickly take off the tyvek and pop on one of the new lids.
This way I can do that to four of them... and then on one of them get a few snap shots of the white fuzz, and maybe a quick smell of it before throwing on the new lid...
and then finally, once the new lids are on... I'm going to shake the FUCK out of these jars... until EVERYTHING is broken down... spore for spore lol
and then suck um up in syringes

Here's the update...
successfully (hopefully!) got the new lids on so I could shake them...
snapped some pictures of the P.E. LC I got goin... might have put it at a huge risk... but figured it was for a good cause and for some good pics... also gave it a quick smell, and it smelled my mushrooms
so thats a good note...

gotta go to work... shook one of the jars, so compare the results when I get home... for if shaking them contams them... with the new lids on I can now turn them upside down to suck up what i need in a syringe... so I figured I would do some tests before shaking them all...
from the smell alone tho, I think they are still good... I'm hoping I didnt put them at TOO much risk from switching the lids tho, But i feel that my lid-switching-sterelize tek that I came up with last minute was good enough to keep um safe

I would love some feed back on these pics if ANYONE has seen this before, or knows what causes this ect...
also the jar I shook looks a little bubbly...

hmmm....

Update... After shaking, it seems that one jar has successfully 'recovered' from the shake... No white islands and it looks pretty healthy (Treasure Coast).
As for the other jars... they seem to be gathering at the top of the jar... while the other half seems to gather at the bottom... and the top of the jar just looks bubbly and almost brown
I need to go out and get gloves before I can inject the BRF jars i made the other day... Since I had to delay the injection, what do you guys think? Should I re-sterilize the BRF jars? It's going to be almost a full 3 days from when I made them to when I can inject them... buuuut I did put them in an empty CLEAN fish tank... sprayed the entire tank with a decent dose of Lysol, and then just a cover over it...
Still good?
opinions?
remake all 10 test jars?
