Knees & Surgery.

So I've recently torn my ACL, and possibly the meniscus, I had an MRI taken on Friday, and I will know the extent of the damage. I will be going through surgery as I'm too active not to...
Does anyone have experience with any similar knee problems? Surgery, etc? What can I expect for a recovery time, and how is physical therapy? How difficult will getting around be immediately after and when will I be able to walk again?
I'm an active skier/backpacker/biker.

I dislocated my knee cap, tore ligements and also damaged cartilage in my knee when I had a knee reco where they re attached a price of bone to my kneecap and also removed a chunk lodged under my knee cap. All up I had a knee brace on for around 6 to 9 weeks first couple days pain was intolerable especially in hospital even with the morphine and way not. After a week or 2 or physio you start to notice a difference. Anyway next couple of weeks definaetly won't be your best. Good luck

I had ACL surgery in 1996. (I was almost 40 then) First few weeks were tough, even with the generous script for Percs and Vicodan. I had to use a machine for the first week or two that flexed and bent my knee for me because I couldn't do it on my own. P T Pain and Torture was brutal, but necessary. I pushed my self hard to get through it, and usually without the Meds.Thank God for the pretty ladies that worked there. 5 years ago I tore the meniscus in the other knee. Arthroscopic surgery and they removed about half of it. (still got it in a specimen jar) Recovery time a little quicker. At this time a MRI of the ACL knee showed some failure and they suggested knee replacement ( no Ins. = about $30,000 ) I told them to save it for our returning walking wounded. Today I'm OK with stairs, ladders, there's some pain daily, and walking down inclines is painful and I due with caution. I fish and wet wading makes me a little nervous these days, especially fast water and salmon battles. I'm conscious of every step these days. Can't afford to blow out a knee again. Meniscus knee clicks with every step, ACL knee still has a numb spot about 3" in diameter on the outside of the kneecap.. My bunion surgery was much more painful and slower recovery. That's why I joined the Shroomery. I needed a hobby. and report back . . .

I'm hoping that today's ACL surgeries will be a lot less intrusive than the ones in 1996. Was that orthoscopic? Everything they're doing for me is going to be orthoscopic, thank god.
I've heard of that machine you're talking about, and I'm hoping I'll be able to bypass that by active water therapy.

No, they opened it right up. The loss of muscle mass that occurred after both operations really disturbed me, especially the ACL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_atrophy My leg even looked skinny-er. My doc was previously team surgeon for MLB (Detroit Tigers? I forget), so I trusted him. They even put a little phillips head screw in there (saw it on a Xray)... scans on a metal detector . I'm sure you'll do better, you're probably younger than I was, and it was a few years after my initial tear that I had the surgery. (I'm a stubborn bastard who thought I could walk it off) I finally really fucked it up doing an awesome out of bound volley ball save at at a friends' daughters graduation party ... teenage bikini , Keg and = vinsue superstar. On a side note, my daughter blew out her ACL a few years back, and she's back doing her Karate. She says she has some pain, but she's a tough one so I don't know how bad (or good) it is. physical therapy and exercise is key to a speedy (and full) recovery. I got to find that pic of me on a party boat 3 weeks after surgery, in the knee brace, fluke fishing, and I catch a monster bluefish My knee opened up and started bleeding, but like I said, I'm a stubborn ole bastard... . . .
