Did the cakes consolidate for a week before birthing? An estimate, I would say any time now....Could be 1 day, 2, 3, 4.....

just keep misting and fanning.
every time you mist fan for like two minutes and make some good evaporation, that should give you a nice pinset

For the people who've said to have about 4-5 inches of perlite, is that for any other reason other than to keep the humidity up?

Yeah, it's there because it gives the cakes good vibes. 5" is critical because each grain of perlite amplifies the vibe effect. Some say they can see a rainbow aura right when they hit the 5" mark in their FC.

What would be the difference be if someone had only 3 inches but the hygrometer read 98-99% humidity?

After you mist and fan you want the cakes to dry a little on the outsides. The evaporation is a major pinning trigger. You don't want to mist when the cake is already wet from misting. This can help contams and/or waterlog your cakes. I like to mist, fan with lid, put lid back on, then wait for a little while after the water has evaporated off the cakes....then do it again.

do you trust your hygrometer? I've read that 3-5 inches of perlite is ok. I use 4. 4 has more surface area for evaporation. I have never used 3 before so I can't compare....

Idk. It's a brand new hygrometer. I took it out the FC to check if the reading would drop. And it dropped to 76 a few minutes after taking it out.

Plus I don't want to go through the hassle of adding more perlite with the risk of damaging/bruising the cakes.

I just birthed 32 jars earlier tonight and 3-4 of then had some pins growing, once I saw the myc had. completely colonized the jars I let them sit for a week before I birthed them. . . Seems like that's one of the universal laws people around here go by

The reason 5 inches seems optimal is due to the average size of the SGFC. 5 inches gives you enough surface area from water to wick from so that it doesn't require maintenance (i.e. rewetting) for a month or so. If you have some slow fruiters you'll appreciate the extra time it gives you.

yah it will just retain its moisture a lot longer with 4 to 5 inches than with 3 inches. but you'll be fine. just keep up the misting and fanning, get lots of evaporation for them pins to form

Quick update: 1 cake has finished it's first flush. It's sitting on a screen with a desiccant underneath.
Question- is it normal for some of the caps and stems to turn almost black?
I'll post pics up soon.
