Shrooms, depression & fluoxitine (prozac)
    #1414540 - 03/27/03 03:14 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Greetings all, sorry if this has been asked before but the search isn't available and I couldn't find anything going through by hand

I'm just wondering if it's safe to use shrooms whilst on a course of fluoxitine (prozac). I take 20mg daily (quite a low dose).

I'm not so conernced with the psychological aspect of using shrooms when depressed, as I've been suffering from depression on and off for 10 years, but only recently started taking medication. I've taken shrooms once in the past whilst going through depression and actually found it a great experience.

So what I really want to know is if there is any danger in mixing the two, or any side effects I should be aware of. Also, if it's not advisable does anybody know how long I should wait after coming off the prozac before using mushrooms?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Ta muchly

Here's an interesting fact, paraphrased from Dr.Rick Strassman's book, 'DMT - The spirit molecule'
Prozac was created by copying(and changing) Pscilocybin. It is basicaly a pharmacological 'rip off' of shrooms in tablet form.

So I can't see a problem, but I'm no medical expert.

You'll be ok. Perhaps a little calmer then the average tripper. If you feel confident that you'll have a pleasent experience go right ahead and have fun.

I think you misunderstand.Flouxetine was created to block serotonin reuptake selectively. They thought serotonin reuptake inhibitors would help people because several drugs that are known to raise mood (psilocybin, tricyclic antidepressants,MAOI's) are also know to have something to do with serotonin.Prozac couldn't be a pharmacological "rip off",their chemical structures are vastly different. They only thing they have in common is they both have potent effects on the serotonin system.Besides that they don't have much in common and they work by entirely different mechanisms.Flouxetine blocks reuptake and psilocin is a direct parial agonist at a few serotonin receptors.

Interesting. So as far as you know, is there any danger/bad side effects I'd get from using both?

Would the fluoxitine lessen the effect?
