Are LED's good enough yet? is HID still key?

HID is still the way to go, LEDs suck ass, if you cant get an HID I suggest
getting several of the t5 fluoro fixtures or a few dozen compact fluorescent bulbs and those cheap light bars, lights of america makes a large fluoro that puts out a shitload of light, they use a mogul base like the HID lights and are internally ballasted so it's just a little wiring and everything is available at home depot

alright. ill look into the flouros thanks.
I guess I could go to growery. alas A: I would not be using it to grow weed, it would be more experimental rare plants, and B: I assume we have a lot more active members here.

LED's work great if you buy a brand thats made specifically for growing, throw in a few flouro fixtures and you can grow some dank ladies. Although not quit as heady or heavy as a HID grow the yields and % content are pretty comparable depending on the grow style.

LED's fucking suck dude. they have absolutely no power to them. They will not penetrate past the second-third leaf set and the plants end up extremely underdeveloped.
Proof: $1100 LED grow king light, pulls 600 watts putts out 2000 watts
LED:

400 watt HPS

Ive seen more then a few grow logs where the end results were dank and sticky, LEDS drain a lot less power throw off minimal heat and raise a lot less suspicion from your electric company then rigging up a bunch of HID's

It turns out well but if you expect to use less power you don't. You need more LED's to cover same amount of grow space. The light doesn't penetrate at all.
I hate led's with a passion.
