OoBYCoO's Homemade Inoculation Loop TEK!!! Shout-out to eLShaMukO for giving me the idea!!!
First you need:
- 4 twisty ties, I used the ones you get w/ a loaf of bread.
- Tape
- Lighter
- Handle- I used a wooden stick that normally goes into those fragrant oil bottles and act as a wick.
Now pair up the ties and twist them together like so...
Now take your lighter and burn off the paper/plastic...
...and you should end up w/ this...
Now twist those two together like so...
Now, do this...
Fasten it to your handle
Tape
DONE!!!

I guess you could but... w/ this way they get red hot super fast. A thicker gauge wire would take longer to flame sterilize IMO.

cool idea and nice write-up. but i would not do any sterile work with tape that close to my work. other than that, it looks pretty good.

This is a bangin' little tek ya got here!!! I just had to replace my scalpel and it had a round top so I used to use it as an inoc loop as well but, my new one isnt as cool so I made one of these bad boys...what great innovation dude

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but this one is the newest for homemade loops-
For a handle, consider an old style x-acto knife handle. Just put your twist tie in where the blade fits. $3 at any office supply store.

It seems it's almost as simple as affixing *some type of wire* to *some type of handle*. Maybe an inoculation loop is nothing more than a small loop of wire with a handle?

True..... but I see alot of people using wood while the x-acto handle can be PC'd to sterilize it.

Cool tek! The only so-so problem i see with it is that when you twist them together there are many spaces where contamination can hide. So sterilizing with alcohol would not be perfect. But if you sterilize this DIY loop in a PC then it would work as a charm.
Thanks man, i was just ordering some inoc loops but your TEK gave me some ideas for DIY.

That's why you heat it to red hot before you use it.

I just bend some wire to shape and use electricians tape for a handle, no contams although I do throw it out & renew every few weeks (but this is due to rust rather than contams).
Oh and this thread is a couple of years old...

Inoculation loops, scalpels, and other metal tools like picks and tweezers should never just be sanitized with alcohol before use. Always flame sterilize. Way to bump and old thread to let everyone know you don't know that.
