what do you see?

When I cross paths with people on the street these days I tend to look them in the eye, much more than in the past. I would say the thing I perceive most in others is a state that I call "self conscious confusion".
What do you see?

I see distracted people. everything today is meant to be a distraction. Sitting on a buss, play with your phone; sitting at home, watch TV; want to use your mind, play a video game; want to get active, play the Wii. Most people are afraid to be alone with themselvs, but im not afraid of solitude and neither should anyone else.
Im just ranting.

I see them and recognize that they're on their own journey, just like I am. I wonder what they think, perhaps it's the same as me. I wonder what kind of things they have encountered in their lives, maybe something extraordinary, or maybe nothing notable. I only really think that when I'm feeling particularly thoughtful, but I know what you mean about making eye contact with people.
People watching has always been interesting to me, especially at crowded places like Venice Beach that attracts an interesting group of people. I always see people that spark my curiosity, and wonder what kind of experiences they've had that made them into the person they are today. It's a great form of meditation for me .

These Pink Floyd lyrics came to mind...

I live in a small town and the majority of people I cross paths with make eye contact. Downtown Vancouver, hardly anyone makes eye contact. Everyone seems so caught up in their thought process and unaware of their surroundings. Can't say I don't get like this at times, but it makes me wonder why there seems to be much more of it in the bigger city. Time to hit the woods.

If you live in a very large city, you interact with ridiculous amounts of people, if you tried to connect, or even make eye contact with everyone, it would be a mission to get anywhere.
Then it just becomes habit. IMO the more exposed you are to others, the more "alone time" you need, even if your retreat is only in your head.

what about those who live in a big city who can walk at a fast pace, while still able to hold their head up at least a little bit to notice a glance? it doesn't seem like they have to try to connect with everyone in order to accomplish that.
but yea... city claustrophobia. if I lived there my head would probably shrink more towards the ground.
