What happened to television?
    #14144324 - 03/18/11 05:07 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

When did it all turn to shit?
And more importantly, why?

Would you guys agree that television seems to have completely lost it?
When do you think TV was at its greatest?

They used to show actual history on the History channel,
real animal encounters on Animal Planet, actual learning on The Learning Channel, wtf happened?

Television = entertainment for the general population. 90% of the general population is stupid.

Got rid of my TV. If I wanna watch something I use netflix. I don't have a big problem with TV aside from the commercials. It's harmless escape. But watching commercials after having not seen any for 6 months? It's a fuckin trip man. You feel so harrassed. Like a new bum on the street coming up to you every 30 seconds and telling you why you should give him money. Except the bum is an obnoxious yuppie in a suit with one of those faggy bluetooth things in his ear.

I am amazed at how much the history channel has fallen off. It's comical at this point. There a few shows that I like so I just end up downloading them on the Internet. I still watch sons of anarchy and breaking bad.

There's only so much history you could really have on a tv channel.

reminiscing about the past of television makes my soul hurt. (in particular, the changes made to TLC, discovery, the history channel, animal planet, and every other once educational channel)

....does anyone else thoroughly enjoy Leave it to Beaver?

that show makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, in an odd kind of way. i love it, but rarely get the chance to see it anymore as it got drowned off of tv by the immense amounts of SHIT that plague it now.

Yeah, this really upsets me.  I used to love these channels.  Animal Planet still has some decent shows though.  Actually, History and National Geographic have a couple good ones too.  I quite like Modern Marvels.  But all the monster quest and ghost hunters and fisherman and trucker and logger shows realllly piss me off.  I rarely watch anymore.  I've seen all the good episodes of Modern Marvels and the like, so there's really not much for me there anymore.

Now all I watch on TV is the food/cooking channel, and comedy central when I'm stoned.  And House, but recently even that's become a bit soap-operay.

I think the whole television issue has always been a stupid medium. Just search for books or documentaries if something sparks your interest instead of mindlessly watching that stupid screen waiting for something astonishing to happen... which never does!

The Hitler Channel is niche programming, better suited to an internet approach.

between The History Chanel and Discovery i have learned everything i ever wanted to know about nazis and sharks.. enough already.

the vast majority of tv is shite but there are some shining examples of fantastic projects.. Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Shameless, Mad Men, etc..

i throw out a blanket statement and say movies are better but the overwhelming majority of movies are shit too.. youre just exposed to less of them. some die off in the first weekend at the box office and no one remembers them again.

Yeah, I've seen a few episodes.  It's pretty cool to see what they do with cakes.  I really love Duff, but I'm more into shows like Chopped and Iron Chef.

Did you see Duff compete on Chopped?  He went out on the first round.
