Cultivating Cyans From Patch?

I tried to attempt to grow out cyan stem butts on cardboard this season we just had but it started to smell like mold so i threw it away. But if i go right back to my same patch at the same spots can't i just go get mycelium spawn from there anytime i want?
Even after it has frozen alot, i can just go and get some spawn whenever right? If so then how exactly should i go about doing this? Just bring some moist cardboard with me and sandwich mycelium in it and bring it home in a bag from the park and keep moist and at room temp until it colonizes? What should i contain the colonizing mycelium/cardboard in?
Should i be sterile in any way while doing this because it seems taking mycelium straight out the ground will have tons of dirty nasty spores all over it which will prevail sooner or later indoors. How should i go about doing this? I can walk to the park within 20mins whenever i want.

why not just take a print, and put it on agar, then transfer to get yourself a clean culture to work with.

Ummm. I woulda shoulda took a print back when they were fruiting. But the PNW season is over now and the cyans have been frozen a few good times.
Im asking if i can just go back to my patches i was picking at and dig up some frozen mycelium from the ground to take home and put at room temp to grow it out on cardboard or something.
I was thinking that contams would take hold badly if you just took some mycelium straight from outside and brought it inside and tried to grow it. But people do it with stem butts on cardboard during the season so i imagine it would be the same.
As long as i could get a good chunk of mycelium without dirt or anything. Which is very possible with some of my patches.
