You're welcome. As to the apparently comforting tone of my posts: that's not entirely intentional. I think the situation is really, really serious. We're now witnessing the second gravest civil nuclear disaster ever. There are only two things that make it a little less bad than it really should be: the fact that there is no real health risk in the majority of Japan and not at all in the rest of the world, and the simple fact that the single worst accident was so incredibly bad that it will be difficult to top under any circumstance. Having said that, I reiterate that this is bad shit. The workers at Fukushima are at real risk, and the teams that have worked to cool the reactors and spent fuel over the last few weeks run heightened risks of contracting cancer at a later age. Nowhere near as bad as the Chernobyl biorobots, but I'd certainly feel uncomfortable myself if I were working at that plant at this time.
But most importantly: this whole nuclear incident has frightened people worldwide, and drawn our intention (mine included) from developments that are more important. The evacuation process at Fukushima has already cost more lives than the accident itself is likely to cost (14 elderly people died when they were moved from their hospital). The quake and tsunami have cost the lives of thousands of people, and the cleanup will take months yet. The impact on the Japanese economy will be felt in that country for years. And in Lybia, the resident madman has enjoyed the fact that the world was looking the other way while is army bombed his own people. All the time, we were watching a situation that would never spin much further out of control than it already has, and we have quite nearly dismissed a whole industry and a source of energy that we should not dismiss on emotional grounds only. All the time, we've been eyeballing a small mound of industrial rubble. I'll keep doing so because I can't help but being fascinated, but I realize all too well that I, and many people with me, just don't have my priorities straight.

cough... dollar not being used as global reserve currency anymore, build up a 1year food bank, open homes to Japanese refugees, priorities... cough ahem
edit: who can say what is more important in terms of tragedy?

thank you koraks.
i was under the assumption that we did not know the exact amount of radiation that has escaped, is there any way to know that at this time?
i think that these kinds of what-if scenarios are worth mentally preparing for, if you want to, in a case such as this where we don't know how much radiation has been released. i didn't mean to scare anybody and i think if you read all my posts and do research yourself you won't worry about this whole thing either because there are easy steps to take to protect yourself, even if it gets to be worse than it probably is.

Well, we ('the masses') don't, but we (the press and those who follow the news carefully) have some indication of radiation measurements in different places, but they (TEPCO, the IAEA and nuclear physicists that are well-informed on the case) can make a pretty good assessment of the total amount of radioactive material or the total dose that has been released so far. Somewhere in the future this data will become public, and then even we, the well-informed public, can make comparisons with other incidents and disasters. But as it stands, we have to rely on the measurements that are released to the public, and piecing those together, an image arises that suggests there is no need to panic.
Of course, events are unfolding, and 'we' are not out of the woods yet by a long shot. The following hours will prove critical, as in that timespan I expect AC power to be restored to the plant and then we'll know how much of the regular cooling systems can be made operational.

Theres no risk of damaging radioactivity reaching the west coast. If all 6 plants have a total meltdown like in Russia, MAYBE we'd need the pill or ask us to stay inside. The gov would give out potassium iodine if that happens, but right now just the blast isnt enough. Its not a complete meltdown (yet) and if it does, they will hand the pill out. Don't take any.....it fucks up your thyroid and that organ controls most of the chemicals/hormones in the body....serious side effects.
They're also testing the air all over the west coast, and all the people and aircrafts, and its within the safe amount.
Our bodies can deal with radiation, the sun pours it over us non stop.

it wasnt how big of a melt down that made chernobyl bad it was the arrogance and stupidity on part of the soviet government and they are totally to blame, shit like that wont happen today, even if they all exploded and melted down, people wouldn't be in harms way.

True story,
The night before the earthquake/tsunami hit Japan i had this dream. I had a house on the beach, i mean right on the water. It was like a pier type of thing and my house on the end of it, surrounded by water.
Then a big wave came and hit my house, but the house stayed up. With waves all around me i did my best to gather as many things as i could and run to the beach where it was safe.
Hmmm.

On September 10th 2001, I decided that I was going to buy the truck I had just looked at the next day.
The tires were "Liberators".

The news just said that small amounts of radiation has reached california and the west coast, but in miniscule amounts. No where near enough to cause any damage

Is this for real or bs? I really wonder:
Red Wine Fights Radiation Better than Iodine Professors recommend the home-made remedy tested after the Accident in Chernobyl
Have red wine instead of iodine solutions to curb the effects of radiation. This is the advice of Bulgarian scholars as a response to the panic stirred after the explosions in the Japanese nuclear plant of Fukushima. Although the explosions in Japan happened at quite a distance from Bulgaria, thousands of Bulgarians stormed into drug stores to buy iodine supplements. This is dangerous as it could damage the thyroid gland, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health alarmed. Red wine consumption is by far a more potent barrier to radiation because of its high tannin concentration, Prof Donka Baykova, deputy chair of the Bulgarian Nutrition Association told the Standart. Red wine is a strong antioxidant and protects against foreign agents, the professor explained. Research carried out by British scientists, evidences that Bulgarian wines are especially beneficial in such cases, according to Prof Baykova. People in Vratsa, northwestern Bulgaria, are masters in banishing the radiation effects by means of red-wine-drinking and consumption of chili peppers. The recipe has been brought from Russian and Ukrainian natives who came to the town after the accident in Chernobyl, 1986. The home-made anti-radiation vaccine has been imported directly from the affected lands.

I come from there and the wine really is nice but I don;t know about banishing radiation.
