light can be used in other ways besides photosynthesis.

what makes you think if there is no photosynthesis then light is irrelevant.

i already used the human vitamin D analogy in this thread.

but humans do not photosynthesize but CLEARLY and OBVIOUSLY we gain NUTRITIONAL VALUE from sunlight.

Shit. "Nutritional value" was not the word I was looking for. I meant energy value. I call bullshit because you said "producing energy" as if fungi photosynthesize.

Thank you for the information. My first colonizing experience went pretty bad. I colonized the jars in a closet with 24/7 darkness w/ FAE and an incubator (as suggested to me by someone else). Took well over a month and a half to fully colonize. Took 14 days to see the first signs of colonization.

It's been less than 24 hours of them being on the shelf and my 5 Amazonian strand jars are already showing signs of colonization. There are spots in all 4 injection sights of each jar. I also have 5 Creeper strands right next to them. So far this is going much better than my last experience. The yields from my last cakes were pathetic and I hypothesize that the growth was stunted because of the initial steps I took during colonization. I used RR Tek for the fruiting stages and it went swimmingly besides the pathetic yields.

Do you have four 1/8 inch holes in the lids?  You want to keep them in open air, but not moving air.  Temperatures should be between 70-80F....Looks like you are getting the hang of it.  You will do much better this time...

Yes there is 4 1/8 inch holes in each jar. Ahh okay, I just had a fan going on the ceiling on low, but I went ahead and turned that off. Thanks for the tip. The room temperature is fluctuating between 76-78 F.

Keep us posted will yah? I think there is a great possibility that my initial post was misguided. Maybe mycelium too benefit from light just as fruit bodies do. If it does, then there is no doubt that speedy stronger growth is more desirable then the "trigger" aspect.

I keep my jars on the same light schedule as my cakes

regardless of what anybody says..Ive had jars that i left half in complete darkness and the other half in natural light.. there was no difference during my experiment.. You can argue about who knows more and what not.. The proof is in the pudding!!

When Colonizing Vermiculite and BRF jars do you have to leave them in total darkness or would they be fine sitting on a shelf? If they need constant darkness how do you typically cover or where do you put your jars?

Try to avoid all the bad advice/info in this thread.  Colonizing in total darkness (not that its terrible) is bunk info and is the way the cavemen did it a while back because they didn't fully understand mushroom cultivation.  Colonize in regular room light during natural daylight hours, it is actually beneficial.  Just avoid direct sunlight.  Light is only a pinning trigger after you introduce the first couple pinning triggers (fresh air, water evaporation, reduction of C02, etc)...

EDIT: Bio and k00laid know their shit

This is true and all but you're sounding like we now do fully understand mushroom cultivation which is FAR FAR from true...we are only breaking the surface...think of all the teks that have come out on these forums from it's birth more than a decade ago...now think of us 200 years later (that is if we don't blow ourselves up of course) think of all the breakthroughs we will have in this field...again we are far from fully understanding mushroom cultivation. We don't even know why psilocyn, psilocybin, and baeocystidin are produced by the mushrooms that produce them...Maybe that will unlock the key to some huge secret in the cultivation of mushrooms...I don't know I'm tired and cranky I'm not trying to be an asshole so I'm sorry if I sounded like one.

OP - It will work either way so just pick the place that is the closest to your prime colonization temps of 72-76 F. Pick a place that is clean or a place that you can clean with a bleach solution or rubbing alcohol or whatever you want. Clean it up and make it sparkle and then put your jars there. It may be preferable to have some light but don't go throwing a large CFL alongside your jars or anything...ambient light is what you want if you want light at all...it's a personal preference thing imo...

Its cool.  I was just trying to clear the things up that ARE PROVEN FACTS.  Like some indirect light is beneficial to the colonizing jars and how light is a pinning trigger after fresh air is introduced.  If it was an opinion I wouldn't have said anything.
