Purification by fire

I am a motivated newby! Having begun reading of the various substrates and more specifically, the sterilization process, I was wondering if the process could be modified and maybe even enhanced by the use of fire? Rather then having to chase down virgin wood, cut trees etc. one might be able to pick up existing 1yr or 2yr old logs off the ground, cut them to the desired size 24", and burn off the outside layers of the wood, then drop it into an over-night, or longer soak and continue with the accepted processes of inoculation with purchased spawn?

what is this? i dont even. how about boiling since burning turns nutrients into ash... or perhaps soaking in alchohol then evaporating it. experimental stuff if anything.

I thought the bark was pretty important for mycelium development on logs. I'm not sure if this is feasible or not

Give it a try, let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, this is true and you'll loose the younger wood that gets colonized quickly if you do clean up old logs this way. The wood in the center of logs serves as a dumping ground for some trees, making it slower to colonize for many species of mushroom and this is all you'll be left with.

Thanks for the encouragement! I am going to try it and I will let you know. The question for me was, if I am going to be pounding spawn into the log, how much difference could the bark make?? I didn't mean to imply a major burn of the log just enough to get the bark. Concerning the alcohol, questions occur like how much, which alcohol, how long, would it be enough to kill off all the bacteria?, would any significant detrimental chemical changes occur etc. Can you tell I am new! I do really thank you for the input and I will try to let you know what happens. Being new, how do I get that ridiculous poll off my original post? I did not wish to have that and I am not sure how it got there! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you're doing with the alcohol. And bacteria shouldn't be that much of a problem, they don't compete well against fungi in wood.
Any part of the the log you use that's colonized with some other fungi will have to be cooked to kill that fungi, or else it will have a head start and be in competition with whatever you grow.
I'm not sure how you get rid of a poll.

No.
They won't work without the bark intact. However, old 'standing dead' trees make excellent substrate material once rendered into sawdust. Make sure it's not rotten first, but if it's good wood, cut it into firewood and save the sawdust for making substrate blocks. RR
