Need some Grammar Nazi help
    #14142339 - 03/18/11 09:48 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I've been wondering this. Is the sentence "He's the guy I work for" grammatically correct, or should it be "He's the guy for whom I work?" Are both accepted?

I know everyone uses the former, but maybe it's wrong.

Both work. Even if the first one isn't strictly correct, that kind of wording is so commomplace nobody is going to call you out on it.

Both are correct. You could modify the first one to "He's the guy whom I work for".  But without the 'whom' is still not wrong as far as I know.

the latter might sound weird because of its passive voice. standard edited american english seems to prefer the active voice, unless passive is deemed appropriate due to context.

It's grammatically correct because it's OK, contrary to what some people think, to end a sentence in a preposition. They're both grammatically correct.
