WASHINGTON - Hackers on Thursday replaced the English-language Web site for Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera with a U.S. flag and the message "Let Freedom Ring."
The hackers, calling themselves the "Freedom Cyber Force Militia," briefly hijacked Internet traffic destined for Al-Jazeera's Web site and redirected it to a different Web page on computers operated by Networld Connections Inc., an Internet provider in Salt Lake City.
The likely hacking technique, called "DNS poisoning," fools so-called domain name servers across the Internet and is relatively difficult to defend against. Internet records show the Web directories sending traffic to Al-Jazeera's site were changed early Thursday, apparently without authorization.
The page also included the message, "God bless our troops," signed by a self-described "Patriot." There was no response to an e-mail sent to an address on the Web page.
A spokesman for Al-Jazeera confirmed the incident but said he had no further information.
The Arab network's Web site has been suffering disruptions for days, ever since it showed pictures of dead and captive U.S. soldiers in Iraq (news - web sites).
Al-Jazeera, also based in Qatar, is an unusually independent voice in the Arab world.

Media are whores. Ours, theirs, everybodys. Our media doesn't want to disgust the veiwers or build up anti-war sentiment. Theirs won't stop showing it for the same reason.
Do you think al-jazzera will show pics of the burned dead babbies from the iran/iraq war? How about those nice ones of the mother and baby cooked together by chemical weapons? Will they compare our bombing acuracy to iraq shelling of the kurds?
Will fox or cnn mention they have military censors in their studios telling them what they can and can't show? Will they tell us which stories where suggested by the government?
joshep gerbeles would be so proud of what he helped to create. Propaganda that sells sneakers and pepsi as well as policy.

I'll be honest with you. I do not support these roving media people riding along with the troops. They get in the way, distract the soldiers and find it necessary to interview soldiers during a fire fight. I'm all for reporting the news but i think it should be independant.
as for that rag Al-Jazeera, you cannot compare the two. While i'm no fan of CNN, they do not just flat out lie about something that happens. They do, however slant it to their liberal side. Anyone with common sense can wade through this kind of propaganda but Al-Jazeera just flat out lies.

Please read this before making allegations that al jazeera lies and western media only slants the truth. it seems that al jazeera shows pictures and film footage that don't fit in with the pentagon's censored version presented to western media. i don't know, Angry Mycologist gave me this advice in another thread...

Well played rhizo.
I watched Arabic tv on C-SPAN for about a half-hour last night. It was out of the United Arab Emerite. Very interesting, and I thought quite fair and balanced. I just missed an Al-Jazeera session on CSPAN a few days ago, I guess I'll never get a chance now.
Damn Iraqis..you'd think putting up with an invasion and all, they wouldn't be able to waste missiles by destroying Iran's tv station.
