Poppy growing
    #14129634 - 03/16/11 09:02 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Spring time is right around the corner, and I'm anxiously awaiting a new grow season. In addition to MJ, medicinal and magic shrooms, cacti/succulents, flowers, and veggies, I also really want to try some Poppies this year.

I'll be growing 10 plants in 3 gallon pots, as well as a guerrilla spot with 10-20 more plants.

My question is - would it be reasonable to expect .2g opium per pod?

Also, what soil mix do poppies enjoy the most? Amount of sunlight?

I know they're fairly easy to grow, but I just want to make sure they are potent as I can get them. Hopefully this winter I'll be sitting down with an opium pipe and a good book, enjoying the milk of paradise.

(if I'm successful I will update with pictures!!)

Right on dude, I'm planning a grow myself, I'm trying to go big, around a hundred or more. :vaped:

I don't know about the potting mix. But from what I've read from a few different places, the average pod yields between 80 and 100 mgs. And also it's good to just give them as much light as you can give them.

This link might be useful for you.

you can get alot more than 1 plant in a 3 gallon pot. think 3 or 4.

For your guerrilla spot mix 1/10 seed wtih 9/10ths sand and just scatter that shit.

Man you should definetly plant more than 10! Use the whole freaking spice bottle my friend, then maximizing yield won't be as critical.

Also, have you considered poppy pod tea? After you pull the opium out, just boil what's left of the pod so you can get every last bit of morphine.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will take it to heart. Perhaps the 3 gallons is too big for 1 plant, so I'll do 15 plants in 2 gallon pots. My goal with that is to have them grow 3-4 pods each. I can't grow too much in this spot.

I have a couple pretty decent guerrillas so I'm hoping in addition to that I could grow 20-30 more plants. Hakim thanks for the mix advice, sounds so easy. I think it would be a good idea to really focus on getting good quantity in these spots.

I have a ton of old poppy seeds, but I have 50 or so good Persian Whites for my main grow.

When all is said and done, I'd like to be able to smoke a good amount of opium 1 day a week.

Wagering - about poppy tea - well I just got off of using poppy tea every day for a year and a half! So you can bet I won't let a poppy pod go to waste lol. (have a pain problem, so opioids are a real blessing, I use prescription hydrocodone now)

Well if you have a chronic pain problem then your probably going to want some backup sources, just in case. Have you heard of Kratom? A big old dose of Kratom can hit you just like a decent dose of oxycodone.

On topic, where did you score a cheap source of pods? The only reason I'm growing my own is that pods were expensive.

I got a pretty cheap connect but I think its against the rules to share.

A pound of cracked pods for 50 bucks, usually around 300 pods of various sizes. If I remember correctly the price might have gone up because its out of season who knows.

Cut the trade talk out of this thread or I will lock it. It is supposed to be about growing poppies not where to get seeds which if I remember correctly is against the rules.

Yeah it was that one post. I didn't continue with anything. I wasn't sure if asking for an email was against the rules.

Obviously you haven't read the Ethnobotanical Gardens forum rules.
