Cakes to dry?
    #14140788 - 03/18/11 12:11 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I made 20 BRF cakes and inoculated them all a few days ago and I am concerned that my cakes may be to dry.  I PC-ed them all for 60 mins at 15 psi with tape over the holes (which I removed after inoculation) and waited for the PC to return to normal pressure before opening.  I used 2 cups of verm, 1 cup water, 1 cup BRF as well as a tablespoon of gypsum for 5 cakes.

The cakes have shrank away from the glass enough that when I inoculated the needle could pretty much fit between the glass and the cake.

I have attached a picture of one of my cakes, do they look dry or am I worried over nothing.

you would rather them be a tad bit too dry then too moist.

What biologys said, better less moist than too wet. If its too wet you can get contamination problems.

They look good. I can tell theyre is moisture from the rice flour clumps against the glass. Once the its getting really colonized, you can actually see some moisture separating.

Seems fine to me. I am now always making my cakes on the dry side because I use 3-5cc's of LC per jar so that adds the moisture back in and also some added nutrients and quicker germination times in my limited experience so that's what I've been doing...

Alright thanks for the feedback. I figured they should be good since I followed the tek so carefully but it's nice to have some reassurence since I tend to worry over nothing .
