I'd be a big fan of NPR if they'd dump the stupid news broadcasts. You can hear that tripe anywhere.

I listen to a ton of NPR and think their news-casts are generally pretty high quality.
At least as good as anything else you can find on the radio.
I especially enjoy how, at least in my area, they carry the BBC Worldservice for quite a few hours a day, which I enjoy greatly.

NPR was incorporated on February 26, 1970. It is under corporate control.
Besides, most Repubs I know don't care about who controls public broadcasting or the slant they favor. They just don't think it's a valid use of taxpayer dollars. They are correct.

There general programming can be quite good. Some of the music puts everything else on the radio to shame. If they would dump the news and quit pretending they're really reporting something vastly different than the rest of the worthless bs on the radio I'd pay money to listen.

that's the problem, they seem to want to post good news, like the story of sarah, the iraqi interpreter that terrorists just want to open up to and tell them where all the weapons are or the one about the CIA interrogator that has a heart and he's a friend of the terrorists and chooses the buddy system to get his information. of course back in my day when you dragged a man's family into the room where you were interrogating him to show them that they;re in good health, it was considered torture because the implication that they'll be tortured is lingering heavily in the prisoner's mind but under the obama plan, that's not psychological torture

What good news? They play out the same sensational and often false crap the other stations do. They just dress it up a little and sell you on the lie that it's really the important news in the world that you need to know. I quit listening to news several years ago and my life has only changed for the better and I didn't need to know hardly any of it.

I love this thread. one guy thinks NPR is too soft, one guy thinks NPR is too corporate, one guy thinks they're the last independent voice, one guy actually thinks the lame world music they play is good, it's rad. It's like that thing with the cavemen that Playdoh guy wrote back in the day
NPR is worth every penny just for science friday, snap judgement, and this american life. The bbc and On Point are also pretty good reporting.
Ultimately, though, federal funding isn't a huge crutch for NPR at this point - hasn't been for quite some time. Another stupid time waster argument where the parties can pose is all this is.
I love the notion that defunding things people work for is job-building, because taking away those jobs (which have people doing them now) to maybe give some sort of roundabout tax relief which may, maybe, create a job if someone uses that relief to start a risky small business or spends enough of it, instead of repairing debt or building wealth with it...
The crazy notion that we have to defund the federal government to create jobs is nuts to me, (it moves jobs at best) or that giving people a few more dollars a year to spend at walmart helps jobs anywhere but china

A public corporation. Now I'm not sure if it's a valid point, but it would seem to be so for me. I could be wrong. It's just become a political football in any case. If they wanted to really save the taxpayer's money, they'd kill the F-35 program. That's become horrendously expensive.

I don't do donation or micro-patronage for any radio station in particular, but I've done it for artists, blogs, comics, etc .
NPR is the only radio station in my market I would even come CLOSE to giving any money directly, though, the market here is all clear channel, all the time

And why I think that we have too much technology rather than too little. The common/average man can rarely know much about what they are using anymore and personal skills and the economy and satisfaction from them do not develop.
This could be an age related bias on my part however. In fact I know it is.

The cars today are so far superior to anything we could ever fix it isn't funny. When I was a kid if a car hit 100,000 miles it was very unusual. Not quite a miracle but definitely remarkable.

What kind of cars were you driving? My old volvo hit 300,000 when I sold it and it was running great. That Ford I mentioned had 180,000 when I sold that for the 88 volvo.

I owned a 64 falcon with a stick. Steel blue. I loved that car. It may have been the best little car I owned. I was a kid and gave it away in trade for a complete piece of shit that I though would make me look cool.

Reality has a well-known progressive/liberal bias(using the american political definitions of those words).
For all the NPR haters - can you honestly point to a better free(radio cost is negligible), widespread and objective source of news in the lower 48? MSNBC, Fox, CNN, etc. are all controlled by mega-corporations who only have an interest in shallow sensationalist coverage at best and cynical political objectives at worst. On a daily basis NPR does more than just provide a smattering of headlines with more Charlie Sheen coverage; they examine the deep causes which manifest themselves in a variety seemingly separate events. You also don't have to put up with greedy mega-corporations selling you shit you don't need for problems you don't have.

I have zero interest in any in depth reporting and analysis by a bunch of biased commie hacks. If they can survive on their own then let them. Otherwise, fuck them. And anybody who turns to radio or television for "in depth analysis" is as shallow as a piece of paper.

Who cares if they're Nazis as long as they don't let it affect their reporting(spoiler: they don't)? I'm guessing you haven't spent much time listening to NPR if you think that it's somehow 'shallow'...Where do you get your information O Wise One?

Oh, but I do have to put up with advertisements for investment firms and banks. NPR is not advertisement-free, at least where I live.

NPR accepts advertising for groups and companies I could never support in good conscience.
Personally I don't care much if they survive or not. I would just quit listening to radio altogether.
Anyone want to buy a Tivoli Audio Model Two radio with separate base and stereo speakers? Sounds better than the Bose and costs less.

I read things. Lots of things. The NY Times cover to cover every day. National Review. Many blogs with links. There is no depth in TV or radio. There really can't be. Those media are by definition shallow. Since you love NPR so much be sure to send them money. Thankfully I won't have to any more.

Bullshit. Liberal most certainly is relevant to commie. "Ignorant asshole" is more relevant to liberal than it is to conservative. Consider myself the archetypical conservative. Consider Annapurna the archetypical liberal. 'Nuff said.

Just because there may be liberals who work at NPR doesn't mean that their coverage is biased. Indeed every independent assessment of their coverage finds it to be reliably nonpartisan and accurate.
I find it hilariously predictable that you list the national review as one of your reliable sources
Quote:
I heard a segment about how Ken is trying to get Barbie to get back together with him on NPR a few weeks ago. I shit you not.
What percentage of their content is made up of such stories. Obviously anyone can find an outlier and present it out of context. Pieces like the ones you have mentioned are typically presented later in the broadcast and add a bit of levity to what could otherwise be a very depressing parade of bad news(embroiled in two wars, high unemployment, rich getting richer by stealing from the rest of us, enabled by morally and intellectually bankrupt politicians and the idiots who vote for them). I actually think it's important to maintain an interest in a variety of topics, cultural as well as political and economic.

Liberals are not (always) commies just as conservatives are not always greedy fear driven assholes. And of course I know NPR is a very liberal news media. That's not relevant to them being commies as you claimed.
You seem to resent the fact that I retired early (mostly due to skillful investing and saving) Not my problem. If you're not capable of it don't be envious of those that are. Not everyone is skillful in managing money. Besides you're really old and you won't have long to wait to be on the dole.

1. Liberals are commies.
2. Who is more driven by fear? Liberals or conservatives. Your premise that conservatives are is stupid. Liberals are so fear driven that they can't accept responsibility for themselves. They need gummint nanny.Quote:

I don't resent anything, I live a good life, probably better than yours. None of it was handed to me, either. What I find disgusting is your dismissal of the vast bulk of humanity as somehow beneath you. Nice pompous seat you have created for yourself.

Nice links. Too bad thy don't understand the difference between "Classical" liberalism and liberalism as it is used today.
As it is used today by who? The fearful, bleating right or people who know what words mean?
Communism speaks to the ownership of the means of production.
Liberalism speaks to the degree of egalitarianism society holds as a goal (Industrial "classical" liberals and modern "social" liberals actually do hold this common belief, after all)
conservatism speaks to a society's willingness to change and the value it places on the status quo
None of these things are opposites, and none of these terms are being used correctly by society at large; particularly in the current american political climate the so called "conservative" right is actually a regressive movement, the so called "small government" movement is actually a pro police-military hegemony movement, and the entire right seems to be actively invested in the destruction of truth.
Likewise, it doesn't matter what "liberalism" meant a few hundred years ago for purposes of this discussion - liberalism hasn't meant "libertarian" for a century, just as republican and abolitionist have ceased to be synonyms.
Their response when questioned? "Well, the 'other side' is 'just as bad'" ... except there is no one other side, there's just everyone else, and there's no "just as bad" there's really just "doesn't agree with us."
I concur with you and Al Franken that broadcast media is essentially short attention span and shallow, however NPR is perhaps the single entity attempting exception to this rule.

WTF are you talking about, I relayed what I heard and gave opinion ca n you refute that opinion by showing me that there's no qualified workers in america while the illegals coming across the border working for lower wages are in fact qualified

I'll have you know that I have a popsicle stick jammed in my alternator right now. It's been there for months.
Of course, it's not a new car per se. 1994

1.) Too busy to take the car to the shop. 2.) Alternator is under warranty, 3.) The problem is intermittent.
I'm waiting for it to fail more reliably when I take it in to be tested and (hopefully) replaced.

It's wedged inbetween the plug and alternator housing. I already tried replacing the plug. It's the alternator.
