Do you have the stones to.........

....hike out into the barren desert mountains of the southwest, alone? Camp out in a remote, isolated area and eat a couple feet of good, mescaline bearing cacti, and sit all night alone and contemplate? In south central new mexico, it's eerie. You can hear coyotes howling in the distance at night out in the desert.

one day maybe i'll find out, with the badlands instead. I've wanted to for a long time but the desert seems so much morwe intense/purifying than the woods. Not to mentiom all the rattlesnakes.

That doesn't sound very...safe. I mean, I'm all for solo tripping in nature (though I haven't yet had the chance), but alone in the middle of a desert? Just sounds like a bad plan to me. I mean, I guess I can't really think of what could go wrong, as long as you stay in your tent and avoid animals and have some way to keep coyotes away and whatnot, but still...just doesn't feel right.

I don’t think animals would be a problem, you'd just need water. Rattlers are the only thing that really concern me. I love snakes and though it's not likely, I would be completely hypnotized by one.

I know a lot places I did day hikes into there, never saw one person in 30 years. Some really nice places up in the mountains, where the desert gives way to scrup pine and pinon trees, and there are some creeks with trout in them, and a mixture of pine trees and cactus. There are a couple places I know like this, they are about 10~15 miles from even a house, and you have to walk half a day to get into the place. I know some that are even closer to some houses, but still have never seen a person there.

Im trying to do just that this year in West texas. Cept not with fresh trichocereus, but dried peyote.
ever heard of the solitario? Its a huge crater from an ancient caldera with protrusions of magma from the earth called laccoliths. these are known for making huge beds of mazonite quartz crystal in the magma as it cools beneath the pressure of the rock. For folks that dig the resonant and conductive properties of quartz you can understand there is an interesting and very tangible "vibe" here.
You can literally walk around 10 square miles of the desert floor of this crater and never get lost because it has jagged rock walls surrounding it. Its very remote and lonely hence the name. Awesome place to set up primitive camp and eat some cacti.
view from the ground of the laccolith's spire. this is the mushroom-shaped protrusion where the magma was forced up and cooled.
view from the air of the crater.

Taos is cool but an expensive tourist trap. Try cutting across the mountains to Red River/Wheeler Peak/Angel Fire. That area is really nice and not as tourist crowded. I plan on going up there at least once, maybe hike to the top of wheeler peak, its the highest point in NM.

As a desert dweller who has camped in every desert in North America, I must say that this seems right up my alley.
Ideally I would take a trip to death valley when the skies will be clear at night, find a nice place to put my cot and sleeping bag, then lay there counting the shooting stars.

I prefer the Chihuahuan Desert (South Central New Mexico) or the Sonoran Desert(Arizona) because the altitude is a lot higher, and there is more surface water. But certainly the low deserts of california are really full of life and nature, though people might not notice it. In the desert in south central NM, people literally die of thrist when there is water everywhere around them.

Yeah I snowshoed up to wheeler peak once. Not something I'd do again for a while. I'd rather be boarding.. Angelfire is a cool mountain, and I have never been to red river. It's only a couple of miles as the crow flies, but an hour+ journey by vehicle. Meh

I went fishing at the end of the road to Wheeler peak, in 2005, caught some cutthroat trout, and I saw people packing up llamas with gear to hike up to the top of Wheeler. this was in July, some of the mountains there still had snow on them.

That Arizona desert down around Sierra Vista is awesome too. That is pretty much the same as south central NM. Same altitude, vegetation, etc. Except there are mountains that go up to 12,000 ft. near my hometown.

The Southwest is fucking beautiful. Originally Im from Phoenix, AZ. My goal is to eat some mescaline or a high dose of shrooms and go to Sedona, AZ. Sheer beauty out there

I have never been to the deserts in the southwest that you speak of. Only really the california desert. It looks beautiful.
