Moving out west! advice needed

So my ladyfriend and I are terribly sick of the midwest (currently living in the Chicago suburbs). We are both major deadheads in our early 20s looking for a kind place to settle down. We've purchased a camper and saved up 3 grand this winter to go towards our new lives and see the sights on our way there. Looking for a warmer place with a decent job market (we aren't yet college educated) and friendly folk to befriend. I visited family in Redding last summer and fell in love with the beauty of Mt. Shasta and the north/central coast but I haven't been any further south than that. A thriving jam/electronic music scene would also be a huge plus but id say nature is our number 1 priority.
Who can help me find my new home?

My advice is dont move to cali. We're about to get rocked by a massive earthquake. Just a matter of time now...

Pacific Northwest is awesome...but not that warm. It has all the nature you need though.

truth be told, i'd recommend checking out the Southwest (maybe New Mexico?). I've lived in the Pacific Northwest and while it is absolutely beautiful it is pretty difficult to get used to the winters up there. just rains and is cloudy for 6 or 7 months straight. no joke.
i lived in a small town in Washington called Bellingham for a spell and man, the scenery was epic! i too am a huge deadhead and Bellingham is a college town filled with young and old hippies/heads alike. but, jobs are extremely hard to come by and the weather is just brutal during the winters.
The Southwest is a part of the states i've been meaning to check out for some time now. Seems to have a nice climate, beautiful nature and maybe some jobs (i don't really know about the jobs, never lived there).
If you're looking for towns with a jam scene i'd say you'll want to look for college/university towns. they seem to have the largest concentrations of concert venues and people that are way into music.
best of luck to you and your lady friend. America is a weird country, enjoy it!

Yeah bellingham is awesome. Its pretty out of the way...but like you said, some of the scenery is amazing!
I would also recommend maybe...New mexico, Arizona, or Texas. California has a TERRIBLE economy, and Oregon/Washington are pretty damn gloomy. gerry wasn't lying, it does rain for 6-7 months straight. It starts to get sunny by the middle of May, and is back to rain by September without fail. It doesn't start getting hot (80+) until July/August...then it's gone.

Thanks guys
I'll surely check out the southwest even though I'm not a fan of arid climates. Rain and fog beats the hell out of the ice that I've dealt with for half of my life.

if you aren't afraid of the rain and fog you might want to check out Portland, Oregon. it's a big enough city for there to be jobs and small enough to meet people and feel comfortable where you are. plus, Portland is a kind of dynamic attractor for creative/interesting/young folks.
lots of hippies and probably a pretty legit music scene. plus, the Oregon coast (not too far from Portland) is amazingly beautiful and has some of the best mushroom hunting in the world.

Colorado is dry and snowy. But a pretty decent place to live.

Climate wise, Washington west of the cascades is wet/cloudy, east of the cascades is dry/sunny.
Spokane isn't too bad a place to live, i haven't lived there myself, but many of my friends have moved there and they love it.
Stay away from Yakima, WA. There ain't shit to do there except drugs.

Arcata is right on the coast so the weather is definitely cooler. But further inland, summers are quite warm and sunny. We have friends that live in Willow Creek, which is about 90 minutes inland from arcata, and it gets up to 90 all summer long, sometimes passed 100. We go swim in the trinity river everyday when we visit.

If you want warmer weather and no rain. San diego is the ticket and the beaches are better and warmer then san fran or oregon. mexico like ten is alot easier to get to if you wanna make a trip to baja or whatever. It is kinda a younger crowd at the gas lamp with the college so close.

New Mexico does seem nice. But it also seems very isolated. There's Albuquerque and Santa Fe... then nothingness. Job market's supposed to be good in Albuquerque area and not much snow though. The mountains around there look beautiful too.

That's EXACTLY why I moved here hahaha..
On a more serious note: it's absolutely fucking gorgeous here, the coast isn't that far away, there are jobs if you're looking for them, and there are a ton of mushroom species to hunt for.. I've only been here about 6 months, and so far, it's my favorite place I have lived in. I would give it some serious thought. .

Job growth is actually very slow in Portland and the surrounding suburbs. And unemployment is 11.1%...
I can't comment on the beauty. I'm sure it's gorgeous. I'd get depressed with the clouds and the rain though.

Job growth is slow, but he said he wasn't above working at mcdonald's, meaning menial work to me.. there are jobs if you're looking and willing to work them.

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

There is a lot to do if you like outdoors, and a lot of ski resorts in the mountains.
