Help Japan
#14137804 - 03/17/11 04:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago) |
|
|

As if anyone doesn't already know, Japan finds itself amidst catastrophe as a result of the 9.0 earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami last Friday, wiping away entire villages, tens of thousands of people, and spawning a nuclear crisis in several of their nuclear power reactors that has resulted in the release of not insignificant amounts of radiation.
With an already indebted country facing this level of human and infrastructure loss, they can use all the help they can get. This is why I am asking all of you to part with the price of a pint and help our brothers and sisters in need. Today only, LivingSocial.com will offer a 100% match for every $5 donation you submit to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund through their website.
[Edit: The Living Social $5 match donation drive is now over, having raised $2,301,130]
For those of you who still wish to donate, I would strongly encourage you to donate directly to the Japanese Red Cross Society through: Google's Japan Crisis Resource page.

Same here I had mentioned to this dude I work with how Japan's having a rough time with the tsunami and continued problems at one of the nuclear power plants and he gives me a look that's a mix of completely uninterested and totally confused.
Apparently there are people who remain oblivious to world events, this guy doesn't watch the news, doesn't read the newspaper, doesn't surf the net at all (mid-fifties older guy) and he works all day by himself as a janitor. Talk about inside a little bubble.

What has amazed me most about this entire event is the resounding mutual respect and peacefulness of the Japanese people. They are really coming together over there to support one another. In stark contrast to how the Katrina hurricane disaster went down in the U.S., there are orderly lines for food and water and practically no looting! Truly remarkable, and deserving of massive respect. What these people are going through is practically unfathomable without being amidst the devastation and having to directly cope with it for oneself. I want to help these people any way I can, and I hope that many of our community members here will feel the same way.

NPR just interviewed a guy that owns a small hardware store in Japan. He is selling everything for the equivalent of $1 each, no matter what you get. When NPR asked him why, he said, "Some things are more important than money."
That would never happen here.

woah woah woah... let's not be so quick to praise the japanese people... the people from the area where the radiation is/was suspected to be leaking into the air are probably gonna become untouchables just like the people from where the bombs were dropped

its not a matter of pity..
if your house burned down, or a flood, you'd want someone to help...even if you didn't ask for it, if someone came and said here man, here's something to try and help you get back on your feet...it would make ya feel better, and help out a bit..
granted im not much on japan, and alot of their ways, but the fact remains that its unfortunate for what happened over there and they need help, so i'll be donating as well..

Everyone benefits from a psychodelic detox. A serious personal journey geared from mushrooms does wonders on your stale perception from time to time. They would not be in right frame of mind to trip.

Damn kinda wish the country wasn't on a tectonic plate. Man I live in California so one is supposedly due soon, but at least we didn't have a 8.9 last time, it was only 6 or something. The scale is logarithmic as well. So a 9 is literally 2x as bad or more as a 6.

My heart goes out to the ones who have frozen to death and the ones who are giving their lives to try put these fires out. I feel for the people who are dying and the ones who are going to die. I love them and I care. Whatever caused them to be where they are, I love them and care about the loss of life. As humans we should care. If I could put/get 50 of them in m house, I would. It wouldn't be pretty but I would give them what I've got and I know that I would get more than I ever could give. Someone send ten of them here and we'll work it out. I'm not looking for a wife, I just want to help and if anyone can tell me what I can do with no money to send then please do. These are human people and I don't know what to do other than send my love and pray for kindness. What hurts my feelings the most is that I want to help and can't. I just hope that vibes and prayers and tears matter, These people are hurting. I'm hurting with them.

LOL Really??? Pray... Ok lets pray to some imaginable "God" to come make everything ok...
God is for people who can't except reality and need something else to hold on to in the fear of death or reality... Life is life do you think god decides each and every tragedy that happens on this earth?
I really doubt anyone gives 2 shits about what happens to you or me let alone a "God" that watches over everyone...
BS thats all i can say is BS...
How can one believe in the bible when it states sooo many things that clearly can't be true... Like a man surviving for days inside of a whale, like really WTF???
Sorry I'm drunk and rambling...

Actually, a 9 would be 1000 times as intense as a 6 on log scale, I believe.

lol! your right... It sounds good from a humanitarian point of view. I feel for them, really, that is a terrible terrible thing. But I wont donate my money to another country and i dont think our country should do either. Plenty of people here need help. But again, i will prey for the people over there. I hope the families that lost lives, i hope good fortune happens to them.

Being Saint Patrick's Day it goes without saying I'm rather drunk, so I'll try to make this quick so I don't ramble on and on... but I happened to check The Shroomery, noticed this thread, and wanted to say a few words.
First, thank you everyone who has donated, those who are praying, and those who have shown their empathy towards Japan. Every penny counts and every prayer is welcomed. I have close family in Japan and it warms my heart to know people care wherever I look, even on the internet. Thank you all.
Second, to those unwilling to show any compassion towards Japan, or those who refuse to donate money simply because it's not "your country"... all I can say is karma is a bitch. It's times like these we need to set aside our differences and help one another simply because help is needed. It's not just the Japanese who are suffering, it's the Americans, French, English, Spanish... everyone and anyone who has loved ones in that country without knowing whether they're alive or dead. It's a worldwide catastrophe being felt in every corner of this world, so if you think "your country" isn't being affected, think again.
Good night and again, thank you everyone who cares.

it's not a matter of who's country it is isn't suffiering. it's all about mee MEE MEEE. i'm not suffering, therefore im not worried about other people suffering cuz it doesnt affect me. has nothing to do with "home countries" or any of that nonsense
and even if i was a little worried. i'll just throw a couple dollars cash their way to feel like i'm making a worthwhile contribution
but thatll just be further satisfying my own need to feel i'm being helpful, exclusively

well all that charity moneys gotta be going somewhere right
hopefully it's not goin' to pay some douchebag american troops' college tuition fund for making sure no japs try to swim to america for shelter after having their abodes trampled in by the lord Poseidon
it probably pays for some labor supplies liek wood blocks or plastic sheeting. that's gonna come in handy

modern technology brings it's own set of issues to the human experience. we now exist in a time when we can know about any catastrophe on the planet almost immediately after it happens. this is an amazing and overwhelming reality for the human mind and spirit.
a hundred and fifty years ago the masses had extremely limited access to what was going on in the world. earthquakes quaked, tsunamis washed people away, volcanoes exploded and despots played out their fucked up despotic fantasies.
the major difference now is we "know" all of these things are happening. so now people have to make a choice. do we help the people in Japan, the people in Darfur, the people in New Zealand, the people in India, the people in...?
it's the paradox of choice. all you can do is decide for yourself where you want to point your energy and empathy.
right now it's Japan, tomorrow it could be you.
--------------------
"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

I agree we should offer them help BUT under the condition that they stop the slaughtering of dolphins and whales , which are sentient, and their destruction of marine ecosystems in general.

Most of japan will get shut down (no-go zone). Tokyo and neighboring countries will also feel the radiation in a massive way. The clouds will come in over the west coast of the united states tonight, going for several days in varying amounts.

Actually, a 9 would be 1000 times as intense as a 6 on log scale, I believe.
Your belief is correct I donated some bucks on another site. Poor folks there. Quake, Tsunami, melting Nuclear Plants now Ice-Storm ... just ...uhhhh... Godzilla

I have been closely following the events unfolding in Japan ever since the initial tsunami. My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones and to all those effected by this devastating act of nature.
Unfortunately some people lack empathy and do not care for anything or anyone but themselves. At this time I would very much like to send a donation to help in the relief effort, but to put it frankly I am flat broke for the time being. So here is what I will try instead:
I have 2 prints made by a Shroomery member who will remain anonymous. I will offer these prints up, for microscopy purposes to the first two people who make a donation of $5 . You can send me a screen shot of the donation to verify before I will send the prints. Will not ship to CA,ID,GA. Prints are for MICROSCOPY USE ONLY.

Sorry but i had to make that Joke, and yes i have donated money to the Japan Crisis. RIP to those people but come on you need to lighten up, it could of been worse. people keep saying this is the worse thing to hit japan, no its not. a Nuclear Disaster would be the end of Eastern Japan.
10,000 people dead isn't bad. but it is bad for those who lost their life.
the Japanese are strong people, they will get over it.

There is a time and a place for everything. This is neither the time nor the place. It is really easy to say lighten up when you are not at all effected by the tragedy. Tell the people over in Japan who have lost ALL there loved ones to lighten up, and hey it could have been worse.
Some people use humor in the face of tragedy as a coping method. I will chalk it up to that in your case.

I think that has all ready happened to them one or twice in the past.

A friend paid me back a decent amount of money and I got my taxes back so I donated $50 more today.

i totally agree, yes i know what happened to japan is really goddam awful but i think its been over exaggerated abit.
once again i will repeat : the japanese are strong people, they will get over it. they work as a unified army, they work together and they will die together.
they have great pride and honour! am not saying you shouldn't help the people of japan am just saying they can take care of themselves. i do joke about the japanese Crisis and the Haiti crisis because its funny on my opinion. if i travelled to Japan where the crisis happened i certainly wouldn't say it, i respect them!

If that happened in Canadaland Im sure you would be all woe is me. Try putting yourself in these people's situation. What they have been through is extremely terrible. When I look at pictures of the destruction and the chief of the nuclear plant breaking down(since radiation levels are now high enough to kill people)it saddens me alot. It sucks to know they are trying so hard and things are slowly progressing worse. It doesnt matter what country you are from, a human is a human. Life is meant to be cherished and so many have had the opportunity taken from them. Sure they have wronged the U.S. in the past, imo even if it is your enemy, you should always lend a hand when needed.

It would be nice if our "leaders" would actually get their act together and TRY to help Japan, instead of obsessing over Libya. What Gaddafi is doing is no worse than what the Sudan and Bahrain governments are doing, or what the UK, US and French governments would do if the people took up arms against them. Japan has been hit by a huge disaster, thousands are dead, many more could die if these nuclear reactors go into meltdown, but instead of focussing their efforts on resolving this situation, all our politicians want to do is bomb more Arabs. Who just happen to have oil. This world is completely insane.

People from other countries aren't less important than people from our country. We're all human. Besides, it's not an either-or situation. Why not help out both?

And seriously folks, even if you don't care about 'foreigners,' it's awfully short-sighted to say that it's 'their problem.' Japan is one of the largest economies in the world, we have been heavily invested in them since WW2. And if their economy drops or fails, ours will too. So even if your empathy isn't developed enough for you to give a shit, maybe your self preservation instinct will be...

Japan is rich enough. Its higly populated and it has the funds, half of the world economy is there, so obviously it gets a lot of publicity. How many of you helped/help Haiti?
Oh, and if this hasn't been posted yet:

Wow how narrow minded people can be. Pearl harbor was like 60+ years ago. Thats more than a half millennium ago. I highly doubt the people of todays japan represent the thoughts, images, ideas, ideology, opinions, etc. of the 1940's.

You know, when I saw commercials asking for money for Japan, I wondered "how much did Japan donate for Katrina?"
Turns out the media did a terrible job of covering how much they supported us in our time of need. 13 million from Japanese corporations, a million from the japanese government, 1.5 million in private donations.
They gave when we needed it, and they deserve the same from us.

Click here to contribute $10 worth of aid to the Red Cross Japan Earthquake Fund for $5.
For those of you whom are able to donate larger amounts, I would strongly encourage you to donate directly to the Japanese Red Cross Society through: Google's Japan Crisis Resource page.

Ok I would just like to say good on you geokills for putting some info and a link to donate, and bringing this up. I know many people in my work also who have no idea whats going on in the world or just dont care. another good way to give is to donate artwork of some sort, there are a lot of good artists on this site ;p WE LOVE YOU JAPAN Ja

It is great if you want to help, but given Japan is well aware of these events happening in the past, now and in the future, I'm sure they are more then well prepared financially for such events; as the USA is for similar events.
Also Japan is allied with China, who is an enemy of the USA.

Instead of money I say we get together and make tons of oyster LC and spawn to drop on those reactors instead of the water they are dropping on there they could be dropping something that will help now and years to come. I have already started, someone make this happen. CH

I have a supply of pharmaceutical grade potassium iodide and would like to help the Japanese people by getting a several hundred doses to them, anybody know how I can go about this? Do we have any shroomerites from or in Japan?
If anyone is interested in buying any PM me, they are as low as $0.30 per adult dose, and have an infinite shelf life because they are not in pill form rather powder form.

everything is under control people. dont worry. go to school 20km away and drink ground water and milk. theres only about 3-4 reactors and a few 1000 tonns of various horrible radiaactive subs blown into high wind orbit around the entire globe. matter of fact, just ignore it and everything will turn out ok. watch mtv instead!

Radiation IS going over the US, most high in the altitude, so rain and hail are something to be avoided. The west coast is hardest hit as you would suspect, from Alaska to California. http://www.atmos.umd.edu/~tcanty/hysplit/
Also, radioactive limits in food and drinks called 'protection action guides' are being adjusted, aka raised, by 10,000 times the current acceptable levels for radioactive iodine-131, other radioactive nucleotides are raised by up to 100,000 times the current "safe" limits! The acceptable levels in soil are also being drastically increased. Why would they make these changes you might ask, well it's simple, it's so that the radiation being found in food and milk from Fukushima can be sold and consumed and so the soil doesn't have to be cleaned of radioactive nucleotides, if we redefine the safe limit to be over what is found from this disaster then it's a non-issue, right? "These new limits would cause a cancer in as much as every fourth person exposed."
But what about Canada, surely they aren't as reckless as the USA.... well their approach is somewhat different, they have chosen to just turn off the fallout detectors, problem solved!
