Help Japan

As if anyone doesn't already know, Japan finds itself amidst catastrophe as a result of the 9.0 earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami last Friday, wiping away entire villages, tens of thousands of people, and spawning a nuclear crisis in several of their nuclear power reactors that has resulted in the release of not insignificant amounts of radiation.
With an already indebted country facing this level of human and infrastructure loss, they can use all the help they can get. This is why I am asking all of you to part with the price of a pint and help our brothers and sisters in need. Today only, LivingSocial.com will offer a 100% match for every $5 donation you submit to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund through their website.
[Edit: The Living Social $5 match donation drive is now over, having raised $2,301,130]
For those of you who still wish to donate, I would strongly encourage you to donate directly to the Japanese Red Cross Society through: Google's Japan Crisis Resource page.

Same here I had mentioned to this dude I work with how Japan's having a rough time with the tsunami and continued problems at one of the nuclear power plants and he gives me a look that's a mix of completely uninterested and totally confused.
Apparently there are people who remain oblivious to world events, this guy doesn't watch the news, doesn't read the newspaper, doesn't surf the net at all (mid-fifties older guy) and he works all day by himself as a janitor. Talk about inside a little bubble.

What has amazed me most about this entire event is the resounding mutual respect and peacefulness of the Japanese people. They are really coming together over there to support one another. In stark contrast to how the Katrina hurricane disaster went down in the U.S., there are orderly lines for food and water and practically no looting! Truly remarkable, and deserving of massive respect. What these people are going through is practically unfathomable without being amidst the devastation and having to directly cope with it for oneself. I want to help these people any way I can, and I hope that many of our community members here will feel the same way.

NPR just interviewed a guy that owns a small hardware store in Japan. He is selling everything for the equivalent of $1 each, no matter what you get. When NPR asked him why, he said, "Some things are more important than money."
That would never happen here.

woah woah woah... let's not be so quick to praise the japanese people... the people from the area where the radiation is/was suspected to be leaking into the air are probably gonna become untouchables just like the people from where the bombs were dropped
also gave 5 ;3

it's really ingrained into their culture, the area has dealt with disasters like this since the beginning and there really is no other nation that pulls together like they do

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell
