Found another motherload patch of yellowfoot...
    #14137627 - 03/17/11 04:27 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all.. so I don't know who may or may not recall, but about a month and a half ago I ended up coming across a spot that yielded about 3 grocery bags full of yellow foot (Craterellus tubaeformis). Well two days ago I was out on a hike with my buddy and we found an even bigger patch! It was intense. I didn't have a camera, so please excuse the cell phone pics.. but I thought I would share. I don't think the pics even do justice, I mean, these yellow foot lined this path for miles it seemed...

But the sad part is that about 95% of them were past their prime :frown:. I picked the few that looked edible, but even they were kind of sub par. I was about two weeks late on this one... on the bright side I did find a bunch of hedgehogs (Hydnum repandum) as well! Most of those were past their prime as well, but I got a good few worth bringing home . I was pleasantly surprised to see them still out and about!

Also I found this, which I suspect to be Pluteus sp., probably P. cervinus? Has a pinkish salmon colored spore print... growing straight out of some maple.

And I found this... I got to say I'm not too sure on this one. It looked like a small mushroom at first, but then proved to be extremely hard to pull out of the ground. In the end it had a stripe that shot over 6" into the ground or more. They grew by themselves and were fairly spread out...

Oh, and some really cool Matchstick lichen!

Happy mushrooming everyone, spring is just about here!

Yeah, yellowfoots can be pretty abundant.  I've got a massive patch that fruits in the fall.  Flavorwise, I rank 'em up near the top!!

Good stuff bud, its bitter sweet when you find a patch late like that.  On one hand; you know you can hit it next year - but you are now aware of what you let slip by this year.  :wowz:

Indeed I will be these spots much more! And thanks for the Phaeocollybia ID. Looks like it is a hard genus to narrow down to species (macroscopically at least).

That's cool that you have a spot that fruits in the fall.. I wonder if my spots were fruiting in the fall... Man, it really is kinda crazy how fruitful yellowfoot flushes are, especially considering that, yeah I think they are almost as good as Chanterelles. They are great. What do you mean by "late" scrambled eggs?

Hey thanks Dub! Yeah, I love me some hedgehogs - though the texture has always been off for my liking. Tasty though. The hedgehogs are a bit more elusive, I have a feeling there were way more at this spot that I wasn't able to uncover..

Well, outside it still looks like crappy winter.. but, yes. The fruit of Spring is arriving! Is there still a lot of snow up where you are at?

Seriously! Like, I can't be mad that I just discovered a mother load patch of delicious edibles, but seeing all this food gone to waste really is a shame. But oh man... next year...  :uptosomething:

Late scramble=I fry the mushrooms in butter (salt, pepper, bit of sugar, spices) then start frying eggs right on top.  Right when the yolk starts to harden, I scramble everything up.  To me it's a consistency thing and I find that the flavors stand out more instead of being all mushed together.
