How to move on the cheap?

Ok guys. I'm moving 2100 miles.
I need to figure out how the hell to get my shit out there on the cheap. The cheapest U-Haul trailer I can find is almost $400 and I'd have to buy a trailer hitch for my car as well....
Anybody have any good ideas/experience on how to move my shit?

Buy a cheap old horse trailer for less than 400 adn get the hitch with the left over cash.
I also like the idea of starting over with nothing.

The only thing I can think of besides getting a u-haul is to check some sites like craigslist for people renting out box trucks or making long deliveries and offer some cash to just transport your stuff. Craigslist and finding randoms over the internet has always sketched me out but there's probably a site like that for people to earn extra cash and help each other out. Kinda like freecycle.

The cheapest way is to rent a truck big enough to fit everything in and drive that shit over there. Do all the labor yourself.

Cheapest TRUCK to rent from u-haul for the trip would be like $1300
I'm seeing a lot of old boats on craigslist for pretty cheap with a trailer (like $200ish).
I wouldn't have much use for the boat, but I'm considering it just cause its so fucking cheap. Could just buy the boat, pack it with shit, ratchet strap everything down, and tie a tarp or two over the top.

Ya know, thats just crazy enough to work... Then you could sell the boat when you get all moved.

I'm just not sure about how well the loading would go with the boat. Gonna be driving through some mountains, after all.

I've used Amtrak freight in the past. I think it cost about $5-600 to move 1000# of stuff 2,200 miles.
They don't do furniture. I also wouldn't trust anything very delicate to them, as they'll stack boxes as they please.
Once, several years ago, I found a very good deal on a one-way rental through a rental car company. Had a mini van for 1 week and it cost about the same as it would have to pick up and drop off at the same location. Such deals are rare, however; I lucked out.
A friend recently rented half a truck for a coast-to-coast move. That cut his costs significantly.
There are also those modular pod things -- basically a big crate they drop off at your place then schlep around for you -- although I know that's not cheap, either.
Moving's expensive. Good luck to you.

Wow. All those pod places are like $1000+. Convenient, but fucking expensive.
I think I'm just gonna fucking sell everything, get a cargo rack for my car, and take what I can.

I was gonna tell you this, but figured that you'd figure it out yourself eventually.
What part of Cali are you moving to?

Any particular reason you decided to move here?

Sweet, good luck with that.
The Bay Area kicks ass, I'm sure you'll like it; make sure to get your marijuana prescription as soon as you get here!

I'd advise that you ask about rates for Amtrak because you'll certainly have a few hundred pounds of shit that won't be worth anything to anyone on Craigslist, but would cost you time and money to replace once you're out west. You could drop it off at the Amtrak station in Milwaukee and pick it up in Oakland.
Well, I'll shut up about that now. I hope your move goes smoothly. It always nice to get rid of the stuff you don't need and lighten the load a little.
