Some fungi growing in my backyard... ID?
    #14136491 - 03/17/11 12:20 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Habitat:

So there's this garden mulch in my backyard that had been mixed with manure quite a few years back. Naturally, I'm sure some sort of fungi spores were interspersed in the mix (passed through the digestive tract of the animal donating the manure). Over time, I presume the mycelium structure within the compost mix grew pretty strong. Recently, whenever I mess with the mulch, either to mix it up, or make holes for planting seeds, I notice a very thick white fuzzy material attached to chunks of the mulch. Based on my knowledge of mycology, I know for fact this is a mycelium structure. Naturally, mushrooms would be expected to sprout soon after a rain, and indeed this is what happened. I would like to ask for professional input on what species this may be, if it would be possible.
The area it is in, is Southwest Houston, Texas; a very humid area, as it is close to the gulf of mexico. We are very near sea level, if not exactly at 0 ft.

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
gills are a manila color, though slightly darker and closer to a tannish brown color. I believe they are attached gills.

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

The length of the average mushroom, I would like to estimate 3.5". diameter is about the size of a nickel (U.S. currency), very hard and stiff, but resembles tearing a stick of string cheese when i tear it vertically. Pretty solid inside, and very thick.

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

Diameter of the average cap is just larger than the cap of a 1 liter soda bottle. Tannish color cap. Soft texture, just like the mushrooms you would get at the store to eat. More conical and round shaped than it is spherical. When it is in it's beginning stages, it is shaped cone wise with the point pointing upward, though as it matures, the ends of the cap curl upward, making it less conical and more round.

Spore print color:
brown colored

Bruising:
Mushroom seems to bruise black. Not pitch black, but a little lighter shade of black (if that makes sense)
Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.
