Tek ownership?

Hi!
I'm wondering if someone can own a mushroom growing technique such as the PF Tek?
For example, Marc R Keith made a mushroom growing tutorial DVD in which he show his version of the PF tek and he is "making" money selling his DVD. He don't mention PFTEK or even Professor Fanaticus. He call them brown rice flour cakes.
I think it's 100% legit for him to show/sell tutorials the way he do it but then again, where is the line between being legit and copyright issue?
I would like to write a small book about mushroom cultivation but I don't want to steal anything that I don't own. I just want to share some of the great tech I find on the internet and in other books. I want to make tutorials my own way (with my own pictures, texts, etc.) but most of the techniques/tips I will show won't be invented from me.
So here is my official question: Is there any problem with making tutorials of mushroom growing technique that I find on internet, in books and on DVDs if I make a correct bibliography? I really want to give the original author all the credit but I want to show the technique my way in the book.
Do I just have to contact the author and ask permission (which I will most probably do) or it's OK to just link the reader to the source of the information?
What do you guys think about that? Thansk!

if I'm not mistaken his intent is to avoid bringing more attention to Fanaticus, PF was busted a few years back and would like to stay out of the lime light... the two know each others and are friends so it's not like he's trying to make cash off of someone elses info, he's making money off the production of the DVD

Actually, the PF guy has a copyright on the name "Psilocybe Fanaticus." And I think that would mean "PF tek" by extension.

Hmmm interesting,
I really don't know what to do...
I can't really write a book on mushroom growing techniques without showing BRF cake tech, 50/50+ casing recipes, straw soaking, straw log, etc.
Any tips?

As far as I'm aware you should be fine. Copyright can be skirted by altering the way it is written. Patents only cover processes that use a developed technology and trade marks cover brands.
So I think you will be fine. You should get some legal advice to make sure. Find a lawyer that gives half an hour free advice. Not sure if you have that over there but here in UK many lawyers will offer half an hour of free advice.
You need to make sure you just don't copy the teks word for word. Alter them as much as you can so that it cannot be proved to be a copy. Then if there is a claim you just have to battle it out in court and the judge decides if its to similar and has been copied.
I'm no expert though so this is all opinion.

Thanks,
i'm sure there is a way to do it. There is not only one book about car mecanics so I don't see why there there can be only one book that talk about straw log and pf tek.
But for exemple: Does talking about soaking wheat straw in soapy water is "copyrighted" by RR ? And if it is, can I talk about this good method in my book if I say it's his idea?
