multi-spore starting various methods clarification
    #14136220 - 03/17/11 11:12 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

If a spore print or syringe is used to inoculate any medium that will suit germination, is it correct that several strains are likely to be co-existing? so that in an LC made from multi-spore and used to start several jar/bags etc. will have multiple strains growing in the jar/bag?

To maximize the number of sub-strains to choose for cloning, is it better to use a syringe to inoculate many LC's, agar plates, jars, whatever or say start 3 or 4 jars/bags and choose from the ones that show the desired traits to clone? will natural competition weed out less competitive strains? or use a larger amount of spores in a smaller environment to find the competitive ones? does it matter much?

Currently watching 2 new LC's from different strains. One was used to start an LC plus 2 bags. The other was used to start a small jar plus 2 LC's with different media, honey vs. karo. Some reading after a prior batch turned out low potency grown with same grain mix with another strain that was much better brought up that genetics is the most important for potency. and that one part of a bulk grow may have different genetics and potency than a portion colonized by different genetics. So how much variance is likely in an LC? will one or two strains predominate or could there be an astronomical number of possibilities?

I'm a newbie with fungi but have a lot of gardening experience as well as animal breeding. Genetics combined with environment is a complex interplay to find a good combination adapted for local conditions and desired outcome. Open pollinated vegetable seeds can self select for conditions far better than hybrid strains but it may take several seasons to get the ones with the most flavor or production. The random factor can lead to many dead ends but also some great surprises.
