SSD Performance

I was gifted a 120gb Intel SSD from work and replaced one of my laptop's mechanical drives for the OS/apps drive Holy crap what a difference. blistering fast amazing speeds. I'm definitely putting a SSD RAID 0 in my next build. Breathed some new life into my ~5 year old laptop. (core 2 duo 2ghz, 2x8600GTm in SLI, 4GB ram) If you've been holding off one buying one, they have been getting a lot better.. About half the price and double the storage they were last year. (1-2 years ago a 60gb SSD was ~$300?) I imagine it's only going to get better.
HERE'S some useful tweaks for optimizing your SSD in Win7

I'd hold off on SSD RAID solutions for a bit yet... still some performance issues the industry is trying to work out. (Namely, TRIM is not supported for SSD in RAID configurations.)

Yeah very good point, although I imagine by the time I'm actually ready to build my new rig, it will probably be fall or this time next year.. they would probably have some of the kinks worked out by then.

I have had a SSD with my Mac for almost a year, I could never go back. I get 15 second boot time and apps launch instantly. For my needs, it does more for making my machine "feel" fast than doubling the memory (still at 4gb, but need 8). I love it, and will do everything possible to keep myself from needing tons local space. 120gb is fine for me so long as I use external storage over networks and such. I am looking forward to OSX Lion which will have TRIM support. I don't have any issues without it, but it makes me wonder what it will do for performance once..

Is that something that would get implemented in the drive, or the RAID controller?

Both, and the OS as well.

Yeah after using an SSD I don't think I can ever go back to a mechanical drive, it would just be torture.. Hopefully they have some of the TRIM and RAID issues cleared up... by oh say Fall 2011 when the X68s come out

thinking fry's and microcenter of late have had pretty good deal on a 256gb refurbished corsair ssd, if one was comfortable going w/ a refurbished product... are going for $255... 30 day limited warranty

No thank you. A 30 day warrant on a refurbished product? You have to be an idiot to buy into that...

That's definitely why I brought mention of it, but who knows if they'd sell you an extended warranty... at $1 a gigabyte, it might be worth investigating...

When I read this, I thought it would be nice if there was a site that tracked the changes in pricing on products over the course of time....
Lo and behold a couple of weeks later I stumbled on camelcamelcamel.com (in a boingboing post) which does exactly that....

I have had some serious heartache with my ssd when working with lots of small files... Compiling a kernel for example can grind your system to a halt.

Currently what type of hard drive will give you the most bang for your buck? a HDD, HHD, or SSD? I know SSDs are the best, but HDDs are the cheapest... but where do HHDs come in? they seem fairly cheap, faster, but have some problems themselves. Im thinking about replacing my hard drive over the summer, which type should i look into putting in my laptop which i plan to used for 2-4 more years?

i did the hack to enable it on my SSDs w/ 10.6.7

somebody else created a gui installer:

great results for me, though it appears for some YMMV

ODD is an optical disk drive, and SDD is a solid state disk drive.

If you do a home built rig and want to see some amazing shit then snag a new SATA 3 SSD and put it on a SATA 3 controller. It's one of the single most impressive hardware upgrades for a PC that I've seen in a long time.
There isn't a huge leap in benefit for them in RAID 0 like HDDs used to get, so taking the $ hit on one is good enough for the OS/software you use the most. I have all the other shit on WD raptors.
<3 SSD! The tweaks around the web are pretty helpful too. I disabled pagefile and prefetch and all the other shit, because contrary to what a lot of other sources say Win 7 never recognized the SSD on my computer and so didn't configure like is sometimes said.

let's not get dyslexic on me, i'm well aware that an HDD is a Hard Disk Drive....
he said HHD, which I wiki'd, and is a hybrid hard drive..... from wiki:
A Hybrid Drive, Hybrid Hard Drive (HHD), or Hybrid Hard Disk Drive (H-HDD) is a type of large-buffer computer hard disk drive. It is different from standard hard drives in that it integrates a cache using non-volatile memory or even a small solid-state drive (SSD).[1] Although the cache typically uses non-volatile flash memory, some drives use battery-backed volatile RAM (a hybrid RAM disk). The flash memory buffer can speed up repeated reads to the same location; a RAM buffer speeds both reads and writes, but must be written to backup storage before power is lost.
