MY FIRST PIN HEADS AHAHAHAHA!!!!
    #1413498 - 03/27/03 08:03 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, so I woke up this morning to fan my cakes that I thought are never going to do anything. It has been almost 4 weeks now with nothing. But to my surprise, at the bottom of one of my cakes I have 3 nice very obvious pin heads with full beautiful color. But I have a question, the pin heads popped up in a spot where there isnt much room from the cake and the rubbermaid container. should I rotate the cake to give them more room to grow?

That's what i do.. make sure you put gloves on and clean the air before opening up the cover and just turn the cakes... If the cakes are on the lid just grab the lid and turn it without touching the cake :-)

the thing is, then you use tat cake after the first flush to inoculate a larger batch of medium by and large, then you cover te top with already colonized stuff. And when after 4 weeks the entire substrate is colonized you flip it over so the old spawn that you used to cover te top is at the bottom so that younger healthier mycelium is at the top which of course will have more pins. *applause*applause (p.s you do put casing on this though... it would be better, ya.

Personally I would NEVER touch a cake while they are growing. The shrooms will find their way to room. My first cake setup I picked them up and I think it made them mature early. That made my shrooms really small and that isn't good.

I can't believe they have been sitting there for 4 weeks and they are just now pinning. I usually have pins within 7 days. What are you're FC paramaters. There has to be something wrong if it is taking that long to colonize.

Another piece of advice. STOP DOING CAKES. They are a waste of time and effort. Do something bulk such as a monotub or doubletub. They require no maintenance and only take about a week longer than your normal cake setup.

Peace Out~
