a thought on fruit size

after combing the search engine i have come up empty handed on the information to quench my curiosity. i recently had a thought about fruit size. iv often pondered how large a fruit body could actually grow. obviously size can vary greatly between strains and even substrains. but my question is can the area of the fruiting surface affect the size of a fruit
the idea being that a gallon of substrate with a 4in^2 fruiting surface creates a larger fruit body than a gallon with a ft^2 fruiting surface. as there will be less fruit bodies to deliver moisture to each will have more to draw from.
or is there a ceiling to fruit size within the genetics. please keep in mind this has nothin to do with overall yield. only size of the individual fruits.

size is mostly nutes, substrate amount and moisture
genetics is a big part too

I found that when spawning rye to bulk. horse manure/straw 25/75 and compressing the substrate until a depth of roughly 4-5Cm's the mushrooms got ENORMOUS, I was averaging anywhere from 14g to 24g dried mushrooms, only got about six but pffft they were quite literally the size of a billy bat. Tried it on more then a few occasions and the results were always great.

Oxygen levels play a large role on fruit size also. Higher CO2 levels will give u smaller caps and longer stems. Same strain indoor vs outdoor ive noticed a large difference in weight. 1.25g indoor and up to like 5g outdoor. Also growing different ways indoor, one that has constant co2 removal and o2 being added grows much larger than say something that needs manual gas exchange. Ive neglected some manual grows before and watched the fruits get very enlongated.

the answer im looking for han nothing to do with the siz of the substraight itself. be it a gallon or 15 gallons. the question is tdoes the size of the fruiting surface affect the fruit size. meaning the surface area that is exposed to light a FAE. again assuming they are exactly the same including WATER CONTENT, NUTRIENTS, AND FRUITING CONDITIONS. i kno this is impossible. but its a hypothesis i would like to kno if anyone has experimented with.

So you're asking if an 8"x8" cake pan with 2" of substrate depth will produce larger or smaller fruits than a 2"x2" square cup that's 8" deep?
I think I'm gonna go with the cup, but I'd be interested to find out if this is true, and why.

very close. sometimes im a dumbass so correct me if im wrong but 8*8=64 in^2 * 2= 128in^3 2*2=4 in^2 * 8= 32in^3
but essentially you have the right idea. think the 9er tek in the gallon jug bottoms and assume you have two equal containers of sub in equal fruiting conditions. now take a piece of paper or watever, cut a 2x2 hole in the middle and tape it over top to keep the edges away from light and FAE. so they are same size, water and nute content, and fruiting condidions. only one has a 4x4 space to fruit on, and the other only has 2x2. on the right track though.

Yeah, my buddy had a little bread loaf pan, like 4in x 3in x 1.5 in. It grew a HUGE 8in long mushroom, but it was because the pans conditions were screwed up and it only grew that one mushroom, and a couple little crap ones during the first flush.
I'd love to see what would happen is someone had a 50 gallon tray ready to fruit and just picked all but the biggest pin -- I can picture the headline: "Man arrested after contacting Guinness about worlds largest illegal mushroom"

without experience i cant validate anything but i believe you to be correct in your assumptions. but this is only reasonable up to a certain point since too thick of a substrate would have a hard time colonizing completely.
it all boils down to the amount of mushrooms pulling water and nutrients from it's food source. so if you have a 12" x 12" (144 sq in) tub you will have hundreds of mushrooms pulling resources; whereas, with a 4" x 4" tray (16 sq in.) and more depth it should have ~9 times less the amount growing, compared to the larger tray, while still having the same overall resources to pull from.
this is not fact, just my opinion.

smaller but deeper surface is going to produce larger fruits. you have more moisure retention as well as a smaller surface which means that less mushrooms but the mycelium will redirect it's efforts to produce bigger fruits.

np guys. it has also inspired me and i hope to do some experimentation. id love to grow one taller than me but thatd take some serious trial and error with the right strain. and i dont have the resources as of now. i hope to see the results of your endeavor.
but as it slightly pertains to this thread which strain in your experiences produces the largest fruits? i kno treasure coast is supposed to be able to produce monster at times.
and i have heard of subs producing one, singular, LARGE fruit body despite having a area large enough to accommodate more. are there specific procedures to induce this or is it simply a variation of genetics. basically is it nature or nurture that is the cause.
again thanks guys.

Search the forums for substrate depths and results and you will find the same information repeated over and over again, for best results a substrate of 4-5Cm's will produce larger fruits then a substrate 1-2Cm's in depth.
