Right now, and for the next couple of months, maybe longer if you are lucky/experienced.
Where?
Woodchip mulched gardens, particularly council gardens as they mulch all their greenwaste (esp. tree prunings) and mulch their garden beds with it. Around car parks, traffic islands, botanic gardens, motorway surrounds etc etc
Subs (subaeruginosa/goldtops) fruit (ie grow mushrooms) in autumn when lower temps (night) signal them. The mycelium needs plenty of moisture at this stage, so fruiting tends to happen after a good rain and a cold southerly.
The mycelium consumes wood, so they are located with their food source (not in paddocks/cowshit etc).
Libs are quite different.

Hey
Just went for a poke around CHCH and found a whole patch of these. but I just grabbed one to ID and make sure. It was found in some soil in a little garden growing on a small layer of bark. The gills are browny/grey and have a slightly golden trim on the edges.
Any ideas?

It's either a Psathyrella species or a Conocybe species, more info is needed, colour of spore deposit would be a good start.

Do they bruise blue? If not, then I'd leave them alone.

Does anyone have any idea what exactly I should be looking for down in invercargill? I was personally thinking probably subs, but I would like an expert opinion because I've not seen anything yet.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Psilocybe semilanceata in their respective habitats.

Dunno about a movie as such... I could take some regular photos and string them together like last year... this is the same tub, same lovely lovely mycelium as these photos: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12470022 I have no pressing need to search...
As a bonus the surf directly in front of my house was doing this today:
...so needless to say, I didn't go to work. There were only three of us out most of the morning.

A time lapse would be incredible.
Roughly how long does it take from pin to maturity in your experience?
Also how long after rain do the pins form?

I'm hunting but no luck yet. I've always left alone these gold top looking mushrooms that are green stained. I've heard of people eating green mushrooms.Anyone got anything to say about green stains?

OK, I'll get shooting. I've got time to capture them twice a day, dawn and dusk. I can gather the images, but I haven't looked into timelapse software or apps.
In my experience, the temp triggers pinning more than the rain, at least for the initial flush (presuming more than one; I only got the one last year). Pin to maturity seems to be around seven to maybe ten days. I harvest when they are mature.
Note that these are about 100 metres from the ocean, subject to a lot of salt spray (this is a Pacific Ocean surf beach, not a sheltered bay).

I remember that tub from last year
This is the sub strain of Psilocybe subaeruginosa that I believe to be closest, if not identical to what they call P. "cyanofriscosa" in SF, I would like to see some comparisons as I think it is the same species.
I think Alan would be interested in doing this comparison!

Green? Forget that.
You want blue, inky blue stains, and a dark browny-purple sporeprint. Have a search through the archives; there's literally thousands of pix of subaeruginosa, which should be all over the Manawatu for the next couple of months. Stick to town. Have you even read the rest of this thread? Any noob should be able to glean enough just from that to get started.

Thank you to all who convinced me to trundle on. I came across these today after a few different locations (Most are reasonably beaten up). My question is: How many to consume?
