I've never seen or heard of these, never knew these existed.
Super cool find.

One theory is that snails and slugs(gastropods) eat the gills and disperse the spores through their frass(poop).

It is a secotioid fungus which means that the basidiocarps are more or less completely enclosed, very rarely you will come across a specimen that shows a margin that has slightly torn free from the stipe, the basidia in this fungus have completely lost all ability to forcefully eject the spores, in the past spore dispersal was thought to be accomplished by birds but I am certain it is slugs and snails that do the majority of the work.
Psilocybe weraroa often fruits early in the season and the fruit bodies can last for quite some time, up to a couple of months, I found one very large specimen three weeks ago.
I sent some material away for DNA sequencing and when compared with the sequence for P. weraroa in GenBank it was found to be different, I suspect the material used for the GenBank sequence was misidentified specimens of Clavogaster novozelandicus, which has also been known as Weraroa virescens.
I have had the DNA sequences of P. weraroa and P. "subsecotioides" compared and they are very closely related but with some significant differences in spore size, my friend says there is one missing DNA marker which he is working on and then he will be doing the phylogenetic analysis.
I didn't bother photographing the one specimen I found three weeks ago because one specimen is not really a good scientific collection, it has been preserved and will probably go to the herbarium in the Czech Republic so my friend will be able to continue his studies.

Weraroa are honestly impossible to find, Its the only species up here which seems to evade all attempts to find. I specifically went out over 20 times into dense native bush in regions I thought would be suitable to no avail. Founds forest subs sometimes but never weraroa :< Maybe this year

My understanding is that their predominant habitat is only between Wellington to Wanganui, although due to wood chip gardens being so popular with councils, they are often found around the rest of the country most often in these.
Not sure how correct that is, but they are so common from Wellington - Palmerston North but seem to be hard to find elsewhere.

Nice work nickc on the weraroa find. I've noticed a lot of Amanitas popping up here on the North Shore this week. Hopefully my psilocybe sites will start producing in the coming weeks.
