Probably.

But my point wasn't really to use nitrogen specifically - its just that there have to be better coolants they could use out there.

honestly i think you can trust the japanese government and its workers to do all they possibly can to prevent the whole country and possibly other parts of the world from suffering from a full on nuclear meltdown.

Not sure how you could get a solid in there very effectively

Unless that shit's completely exposed and they drop dry ice powder on it.

THat'd be a lot of carbon credits to pay though :frown:

ok, so how much radiation could reach the US in a worst case scenario?  multiple meltdowns, lots of radiation released, and wind patterns coming to america.

how would you quantify the amount of radiation in a cloud or some wind in any comprehensible manner? i'm really curious...

By the reading on a Geiger counter pointed at the cloud.

Also, water's a really good coolant. That's what they use to cool everything at the plant under normal circumstances. Plus, it's readily available.

this. When talking about Japanese scientists and workers we must realize we are talking about some of the most brilliant minds and most industrious people in the world. If there is any nation that has the spirit to deal with a crisis of this magnitude it's the Japanese. Imagine if this were happening in the states? I mean look at how bad we fucked up Hurricane Katrina relief.

Its good. But sometimes not good enough.

In Chernobyl they actually did attempt to use liquid nitrogen to freeze the ground surrounding the reactor - and cool the reactor itself but by then it had melted down far more than they had expected. Who knows if it would've actually worked at all or not.

Fucking truth.

Japan was the most prepared country in the world to deal with a tsunami and just the fact that the tsunami did this much damage is a testament to it's power.

the official story is that there has been no full meltdown, but i'm not so sure, i'm thinking of heading to south america or at least mexico, probably furthur down the better right?  at least until the situation cools down and we figure out how much radiation actually falls on the us.

threadkiller!  didn't mean to scare you guys.

there are herbs you can use to detox the uranium and other isotopes from your system http://workingtheroots.blogspot.com/2011/03/natural-ways-to-protect-yourself-from.html

http://blog.imva.info/medicine/treatments-nuclear-contamination (good website for info, but the products he reccomends are expensive and easily made yourself.

even if there is not enough potassium iodide, there are alternatives.

If I ever heard there was hardcore dirty nuke-age in the air I would:

1.) hunt down chemistry professor.

2.) make sure he knows to start making as much sodium iodide as he can, as we'll need it. it's not hard to do and I could probably do it myself with some instruction.

(at gunpoint if necessary! this could save an entire community)

EDIT: I could totally make sodium iodide.

Probably be dead man walking by the time I produced it, but that wouldn't be true of lots of people who stayed in holes in the ground, who I would then deliver it to, and then commit suicide. Radiation poisoning sounds nightmarish.

You have to realize from a fallout perspective, the people with the best sealed up space are going to survive best. Immediately surrounding the meltdown those people are fucked if they don't get a thick, thick wall of matter between them and the radiation. Over here a bubble boy approach would be more effective, thinner wall necessary to absorb ambient radiation but keeping activated particulates out of your breathing air would then be critical.

I used to know someone with a Geiger counter, now I wish i still did, or at least had one myself. It doesn't have to be government standards to tell you "you're fucked, dude." He had some samples we used to joke about not holding for more than a few minutes.

To really survive nuclear fallout, you need a bunker with a good thick walling, the best filtration system possible available to keep your air as clean as possible, Potassium Iodide to saturate your thyroid with iodine that isn't radioactive and enough food to ride it out.

Despite what crazy anti-nuclear proliferation nuts might imply, the actual fallout would dissipate quickly enough. It would only be the heavily irradiated areas that would be tainted for decades. You know you can already ride through chernobyl (technically) safely? Just don't stop... if you eat your own dust it'll kill you because the dirt is still irradiated.

sodium iodide has bad side effects wheras the herbal, natural route has none and works just as well.  if you read my above post you will find this passage among others:

"Following the bombing of Nagasaki, a group of surviving macrobiotic doctors and their patients avoided radiation sickness by eating brown rice, miso and seaweed. They also did not get leukemia. Seaweeds also help to break down fatty deposits. High-chlorophyll foods like wheatgrass and barley grass strengthen cells, transport oxygen, help to detoxify the blood and liver as well as help to neutralize polluting elements and stimulate RNA production. Sulfur-rich vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and mustard greens combine with heavy metals and help prevent free radical damage,” says Mars."

i changed the link to http://workingtheroots.blogspot.com/2011/03/natural-ways-to-protect-yourself-from.html
from the original link, actually, i'll put them both there... the first one tells you to buy prepackaged remedies that can easily be made yourself for much less money.  but it's a good website for information so i'll keep it up.
