A Way To Make Your Own Magnetic Stir Bars???

Just wondering if anyone had a cool way to make your own stirbars for use in agitating your LCs? I was thinking of taking a large nail and cutting it into 1 1/2" sections, then covering it in plastic shrinkwrap tubing. Maybe wipe with some isopropyl, let it dry, and then drop it in my LC before PCing it or steaming it. I'll then be using a magnetic stirrer I made from the magnets out of an old hard drive and a computer fan to spin the nail/stir bar around every day or so. Any thoughts or suggestions? My idea should work fine, but I'd like to hear some input from others on it. I've even looked on eBay, and I just can't afford enough stir bars to put one in each of my working cultures.

I have heard of people using screws or nails, eh, doesn't sound attractive to me. I have also heard of people using cow magnets. These are magnets that people feed to cows because the cows eat all sorts of sharp metals that tear up their insides. The metal sticks to the magnet in their stomach. These are available at feed stores, or maybe some sort of stock animal supply store or vet. This is a little bit better sounding to me. Then you could just buy some stir bars, they are only a couple bucks, and are designed to be used in sterile environments and are often autoclavable.

In solid state we ran out of stir bars and used paperclips as an impromptu option.
There's just 1 trick. You know how there's an inner ringish thing and an outer ringish thing? Bend the inner ring out to about 40 degrees, so that both sections remain parallel. If it doesn't work quite right, mess with the angle of the bend till its stirring how you want. They have clips that are already coated in a thin plastic so the protection is done for you!

Yeah, I just thought I'd use the shrink wrap to prevent them from rusting or anything. Read a thread on here somewhere where a guy used chunks of nails but they started to rust after a few uses, and the rust ended up flaking off into his LC. Figured the shrink wrap would just make them a little more reusable, you know?

real stir bars are ptfe covered and that is nonreactive with many things and also genital on the glass so it won't scratch it up causing breakage later. What you spend on bars you might save on glass later plus they are much quieter if you have a bunch going at once or even just one and don't want any nosy nearby people to hear it. I have seen sets on ebay for 30 bucks.

According to arrg, the store bought ones are 'genital on glass'.

if you stir stuff for days on end they make a difference. My mom can stop by with a pot roast and have dinner without hearing that shit going but I tried other stuff before when I needed extra and other shit is loud. Real stir bars=good free food dropped off.
