Sleep paralysis
    #14131029 - 03/16/11 01:39 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

A few nights ago I experienced for the second time what I now know to be sleep paralysis. I can definitively say that I hope this never happens to me again.

The first time I was sleeping at my friends house on the couch. I "woke up" but couldn't move. Then a hunger began devouring me.

Usually I can wake myself up from nightmares by jerking my arms around. This time I had no such luck.

The second time I though I was paralyzed because I had somehow ingested a whole bunch of shattered glass. I was also at my friends house sleeping on the couch.

To anyone who has experience with this: Is it always some nightmarish event or can it be like a good dream sometimes. Is there a way to wake yourself up from this? Are there ways to prevent it?

I used to have sleep paralysis all the time and yeah it is a real bitch, but I know how to overcome it now and haven't had a episode in a couple years.

First, when in an episode the fastest way out is to cough the word 'cough', and keep doing it.  Sounds weird, but coughing is both an involuntary and voluntary response and helps break the connection into sleep.  Saying the word 'cough' while coughing seems to make it stronger.  Also, NEVER sleep strait on your back (supine position) this seems to make it worse.  Still today even though i don't have episodes I dont sleep on my back to aggrivate a chance of it.

The reason you are having the sleep paralysis is because of a few factors.  Stress, heavy amount of work in the day, not enough calories, too much caffeine especially at night, to much sugary food at night can all play in.  I am bipolar and it seems that bipolars are susceptible to it.  Its all about having too much brain energy while going into the sleep process.

Eating caffeine and sugar at night obviously makes your brain rush but also not eating enough protein and good food will give you mania which will make your brain race.  If you are bipolar this mania is worse when you don't eat.

Tripping always makes it much more manageable.  I smoke weed every day and that helps.  But even when I was having lots of episodes I still smoked lots with no avail.  It wasn't till it tripped HARD or acid or shrooms that I got relief.

If you get out of an episode by coughing and wake up but still feel like if you lay back down you are going to go back into paralysis you need to try to smoke some weed, eat some protein rich food (even drinking a glass of milk helps), and drink a glass of water.  You may also get some relief by drinking a couple tablespoons of pickle juice cause the vinegar and salt.  The main thing is that your body is CRAVING some nutrition, whether it protein, fat, salt, acid, etc and it wont let you fall asleep soundly till you get it.

Thanks for the response. It is probably a mixture of sleeping on my back and eating ice cream before sleep. It has never happened to me at home because I sleep on my side in my bed. That's harder to do on a couch though. I would definitely smoke a bowl, but am currently unable to because I'm looking for work.

I just hope that if it happens again I will remember to do the coughing thing.

Really I know how much a pain sleep paralysis is but I'll have to tell you I have had some amazing experiences with it as well.  I believe that probably 100% of alien abduction stories, some ghost stories, and stories of demons have come from sleep paralysis in history.

It used to be called "old hag's syndrome" because people had visions of some hag crouched and standing on their chest with its hands around the persons neck.  Some reported succubi that would rape the person.  But it was all sleep paralysis.  When your body goes into the sleep cycle it paralyzes all your muscles (except eyeballs) so you dont flail about and act out your dreams.  But if you are still awake when this happens all you can do is look around and begin to hallucinate from the dream state like you just dropped a ten strip of acid instantly.  Also, while going into the dream state your body releases chemical signals akin to the fight or flight response which is responsible for the terror and horror themes of the experience.

I had an experience where I'm laying in bed and wake up to the sound of some strange humming twanging noise coming from the living room.  I go into the room and see my acoustic guitar on its stand and the strings are buzzing very very hard and making the trippy sound.  Then the guitar begins to float up off the stand while still playing like a poltergeist and all I can do is clap to the music it makes like I am possessed as well.

I had an experience of being in a white room and can't move or look around but hear crashing giant footsteps coming my way.  Then I fight to wake up.

I had one where I'm looking at a beautiful cathedral glass window coming towards me. Reminded me of scene in movie 'Frailty' when guy under car and sees vision of angel.

I had lots of ones where I couldn't make out what or who I was seeing as everything was out of focus.  And when I concentrated on one point to try to bring things into focus I could see it all for a second then Id be forced out of the paralysis.

I also have one serious and personal experience that I would pm you if you interested but I wont post it publicly.

If you don't want to post it in public then probably don't share it with me. Thanks for the offer though.

I am glad to hear that sleep paralysis can possibly be an amazing experience. Hopefully if it ever happens again that's what will happen.
