Electrical Question ...

I'm attempting to build an electric 30 gallon waterbath pasteurizer. I'm emulating ozzy's idea.
I'm using two 4500W/240V electric water heater elements as a heat source. My problem is my house doesn't have a 220V outlet, so I have to install a 220V breaker to outlet off my breaker box.
My question is does anyone know how to figure out the proper size of breaker amperage required. 30A, 40A, 50A breaker???...I dunno

4500W divided by 240V = 18.75 amps. So, 30 or 40 would be ok. I'd do 40.

Thanks doc thats what I was thinking, however I didn't know if I should add the amperage considering I'm using two elements. 18.7+18.7 or just 18.7A

D'oh! If they are both on at once, then yes add them. 40-50 amps.
Man, that's a lot of power...

It sure is and I'm not to savvy when it comes to electrical. I'm afraid I'm going to shock the eyes out my skull even though I turn off main breaker lol.

2 elements is overkill, even one of those 220v elements is a bit much, especially for only 30gal. I use one 1500w 110v element and it brings a 55 gal full of hot water and straw up to 160f in an hour then 1 hour for pasteurization (ending about 165f), making a 2 hour pasteurization cycle without needing a thermostat. Using a thermostat will slow the heating down as it will turn off momentarily to protect itself. If you wire without a thermo and use only 30 gal it will come up to temp too fast and you will have to watch and unplug when it gets too hot.

Also, having that much power is dangerous. Say something comes up (you smoke some kick ass weed) and forget about the drum only to remember when you hear roaring boiling water.
